About The Position

This is a critical public safety position responsible for ensuring the safe crossing of school-age children at designated intersections during school arrival and dismissal periods. Scheduled hours align with the operating hours of local public schools.

Requirements

  • Ability to stand outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and assertively with drivers and pedestrians.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work a consistent schedule aligned with the school calendar.
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must have the ability to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods, to work outdoors in various weather conditions, and to quickly intervene in unsafe situations.
  • Need visual and auditory acuity sufficient to monitor traffic and pedestrian activity.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, night vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working with children or in public safety preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and control pedestrian and vehicular traffic at assigned intersections or crosswalks to ensure the safe crossing of school children.
  • Use appropriate signals, signage, and safety equipment (stop paddle, reflective vest) to alert drivers and pedestrians.
  • Arrive at assigned post promptly.
  • Maintain a visible, alert and professional presence always while on duty.
  • Interact courteously and professionally with children, parents, school staff, motorists and members of the public.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately in emergencies, including traffic incidents or accidents.
  • Complete incident reports as needed.
  • Attend training sessions as required.
