About The Position

KIPP Miami is seeking a School Crossing Guard to ensure the safety of students and families during arrival and dismissal times. This role involves guiding pedestrians across designated crosswalks, controlling traffic with a STOP sign, maintaining vigilance for potential hazards, and communicating clearly with students, parents, and drivers. The crossing guard will also collaborate with school staff and potentially law enforcement, build positive community relationships, and report any safety concerns to administrators. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about working with children and contributing to the school community, serving as a role model and ambassador for KIPP Miami.

Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to give clear, firm instructions while maintaining a courteous and friendly demeanor.
  • A passion for working with children and contributing to the school community.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to meet all background screening requirements for working in a Florida school.
  • Must pass a Level 2 criminal background check (fingerprinting through FDLE/FBI) with clearance to work with children.
  • Able to stand and walk outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions (heat, rain, etc.).
  • Sufficient strength and mobility to move quickly in front of oncoming traffic if needed.
  • Arm dexterity to hold up a STOP sign for several minutes at a time.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Florida School Crossing Guard Certification is a plus.
  • Candidates without certification must be willing to complete the required training program administered by Miami-Dade College.

Responsibilities

  • Safely guide students and families across designated crosswalks and intersections during arrival and dismissal.
  • Maintain a visible, alert presence to ensure all pedestrians cross streets securely.
  • Use a handheld STOP sign/paddle to stop traffic when children are crossing.
  • Direct cars, school buses, and pedestrians according to established traffic safety procedures.
  • Stay vigilant to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and act promptly to maintain traffic flow and student safety.
  • Communicate instructions clearly and courteously to students, parents, and drivers.
  • Work in coordination with school staff and supervisors to manage the drop-off/pick-up process.
  • Follow the school’s arrival/dismissal plan and promptly report any issues.
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, and neighbors.
  • Uphold all school, county, and college safety regulations.
  • Monitor the environment and immediately report any incidents, unsafe conditions, or unusual situations to school administrators.
  • Be prepared to act in accordance with emergency protocols and communicate with the Director of Regional Operations and Compliance about any concerns.
