About The Position

Academies of Math and Science (AMS) is a network of high-performing K–8 public charter schools committed to academic excellence, college readiness, and equitable access to high-quality education for students in historically underserved communities. AMS is seeking a compassionate and data-driven School Counselor (K–8) to join our team at the Nellis Campus in Las Vegas. The School Counselor plays a critical role in supporting the social, emotional, and behavioral well-being of scholars, ensuring they are equipped to fully engage in AMS’s rigorous academic program. This role partners closely with campus leadership, teachers, and families to implement a comprehensive counseling program that promotes student success, accountability, and a positive school culture. The ideal candidate is empathetic, structured, and solutions-oriented, with a strong belief that all scholars can succeed when provided with the right supports and high expectations.

Requirements

  • Valid School Counselor license issued by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, Guidance Counseling, or a related field
  • Successfully complete required Nevada state background checks and clearances
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Show commitment to serving Title I and multilingual learner communities
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Exhibit a collaborative, professional, and student-centered approach

Nice To Haves

  • 1–3 years of experience in a school counseling role
  • Experience working in a Title I or high-need school environment
  • Experience supporting English Language Learners (ELLs)
  • Experience designing and delivering professional development for staff
  • Familiarity with PBIS and social-emotional learning frameworks

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling focused on social-emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs.
  • Ensure identified at-risk students receive consistent check-ins and targeted support.
  • Support students in developing self-regulation, problem-solving, and coping skills.
  • Identify and respond to students in crisis, following established safety and escalation protocols.
  • Maintain confidential student records in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, and community agencies to support student needs.
  • Partner with campus leadership to align counseling supports with PBIS and school-wide behavior systems.
  • Support student transitions, including preparation for high school and post-secondary pathways.
  • Identify students requiring additional services and facilitate appropriate referrals and interventions.
  • Develop and deliver professional development and training for staff related to student mental health and social-emotional learning.
  • Implement and support school-wide SEL programming (e.g., Character Strong or similar frameworks).
  • Serve as a campus resource on SEL best practices, mental health awareness, and student support strategies.
  • Participate in school events such as recognition ceremonies, family events, and campus activities.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and student-centered school culture.
