This position involves designing and implementing a data-driven, comprehensive school counseling program for all students. The program aims to address barriers to student learning and close achievement/opportunity gaps. Comprehensive school counseling programs focus on three areas of student development: academic, college/career, and social-emotional. The role provides direct services to students, including counseling core curriculum, individual and group counseling, and preventative/responsive services. Indirect services involve referrals, consultation, and collaboration with parents, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to foster equitable learning environments. The counselor will deliver programs promoting essential student mindsets and behaviors aligned with college/career readiness, increase understanding of school counseling standards, and engage the school community. Leadership, advocacy, and collaboration skills are essential for creating systemic change to improve academic, social-emotional, and post-graduate success. The role acts as a systems change agent to ensure a safe and supportive school climate. Fostering parent and community partnerships is key, as is infusing cultural competence and ethical practices. Counseling is provided during times of transition, stress, and critical change. Support for mental health services, including prevention and intervention, and collaboration with community mental health providers are also part of the role. The counselor will develop and communicate a clear vision and mission statement for the school counseling program, use school data to identify and assist students performing below grade level, and utilize technology effectively. Legal and ethical decision-making based on professional standards and policies is required. Additionally, performing Medicaid administrative claims reimbursable activities as directed is part of the responsibilities.
