About The Position

Assist students in developing the academic, personal, social, and career-readiness skills needed for success in middle school and future transitions. Support students, families, and staff through academic guidance, social-emotional support, brief counseling, crisis response, and coordination of appropriate school and community resources.

Requirements

  • Hold a valid TSPC-issued Oregon School Counselor license.
  • Possess skills to communicate effectively with students, families, staff, administrators, and community partners.
  • Acquire, maintain, and demonstrate knowledge of Oregon diploma requirements, middle school promotion practices, and other information necessary to support students effectively.
  • Be familiar with tools and techniques used in brief counseling, crisis response, student support planning, and referral processes.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of middle school student development, social-emotional learning, behavior support, academic intervention, and family engagement.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in written and oral English.
  • General knowledge of computer technology, email, internet software, spreadsheets, student information systems, and word processing software.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Academic Guidance: Assist students in developing academic goals and personal education plans. Advise students and parents/guardians regarding student progress, academic needs, school expectations, and successful transition into and from middle school. Coordinate with teachers, administrators, families, and school support staff to support student success. Monitor student records, grades, attendance, behavior data, and other relevant information to help identify student needs and develop support plans. Assist in the development of the master schedule. Assist with student class scheduling and appropriate placement. Provide students and families with information related to academic progress, goal-setting, skill development, course selection, and future planning. Prepare necessary documentation for teachers, families, school teams, and appropriate external agencies. Assist with appropriate placement and support of students in specialized programs including TAG, students with disabilities, IEPs, and 504 plans. Continue professional knowledge through district-provided in-service activities and self-selected professional growth opportunities. Assist teachers and administration in establishing school programs and activities aligned to student academic success. Assist with student testing and interpretation of results, including career interest inventories, academic screeners, state assessments, and other student support tools.
  • Career Readiness Support: Engage in age-appropriate career exploration and future planning activities. Assist students in identifying interests, strengths, goals, and possible career pathways. Coordinate with teachers, administrators, families, community partners, and resource specialists to support career-readiness activities. Provide information to students and parents/guardians on goal-setting, skill development, career awareness, and future educational planning. Assist with student personal education plans and career exploration activities. Support schoolwide programs and activities connected to career awareness, student leadership, and future readiness.
  • Personal/Social Support: Counsel students individually and in groups through appropriate counseling techniques to support student success in school. Support students in developing skills related to self-regulation, conflict resolution, decision-making, attendance, behavior, peer relationships, and personal responsibility. Assist teachers and administration in establishing school programs and activities that enhance the personal, social, and academic success of students. Assist with appropriate support and placement of students in specialized programs including TAG, students with disabilities, IEPs, and 504 plans. Provide crisis and brief counseling as needed. Provide referrals for students and families to outside counseling and community-based services as needed. Collaborate with families, teachers, administrators, and support staff to address student concerns. Participate in student support meetings, parent meetings, team meetings, and other school-based intervention processes.
  • Related Responsibilities and Characteristics: Maintain professional confidentiality concerning individual student information and achievement. Participate in various meetings, including staff meetings, student support meetings, parent conferences, team meetings, and in-service training, for the purpose of receiving and providing information or sharing expertise. Maintain a high level of professional integrity by adhering to Teacher Standards and Practices Commission requirements for ethical educators, district policy, board policy, and state law. Work collaboratively with students, families, staff, administrators, and community partners. Support a positive school climate focused on student belonging, safety, responsibility, and academic success.
