About The Position

Texas Sports Academy is seeking a dedicated School Counselor to serve as its first dedicated mental health professional. This remote, full-time role will focus on building student wellness support from the ground up. The position is a clinical role responsible for crisis intervention, including assessing suicide risk, building safety plans, and managing support plans following student outcries. The counselor will work remotely with students across Texas, requiring the ability to build trust and provide support via video conferencing. The ideal candidate will have a full independent Texas clinical license, a clinical master's degree, and hands-on crisis experience.

Requirements

  • Assessed suicide risk, built safety plans, and stayed steady through active crises, including over video.
  • Know when a situation needs DFPS, 911, or 988, and make that call without hesitating.
  • Ability to build trust with a student through a screen: proactive, visible, and easy to reach.
  • Fluent in trauma-informed, strengths-based work.
  • 2+ years of clinical experience with children and adolescents.
  • Full, independent Texas clinical license (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or licensed psychologist). Associate and provisional licenses do not meet this requirement.
  • Master's degree or higher in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or psychology.

Nice To Haves

  • Telehealth experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a school setting or with school-based mental health programs.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Experience working with student-athletes and understanding performance-related stress.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the same-day clinical escalation point for suicidal statements, self-harm, and mental health crises.
  • Conduct risk assessments, build safety plans with students and families, and coordinate with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) and 911/988 when a crisis requires it.
  • Own the ongoing support plan for each student after an outcry, crisis, or DFPS report, including check-ins, accommodations, and coordination with guides and families.
  • Provide brief, solution-focused counseling in the moment of need.
  • Refer students to community providers when they need ongoing therapy.
  • Review patterns flagged by guides (attendance, disengagement, concerning work) and reach out to students proactively.
  • Train guides to recognize warning signs, respond to disclosures appropriately, and follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Maintain confidential clinical and support records.
