About The Position

The PreK–8 School Counselor provides a comprehensive school counseling program that supports the academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and career development needs of all students. The counselor collaborates with students, staff, families, and community partners to promote student success, positive school climate, and proactive intervention systems aligned with district goals and student support frameworks.

Requirements

  • Valid Kansas School Counselor license/certification
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with elementary and/or middle school students preferred
  • Knowledge of MTSS, student intervention systems, and data-informed practices preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students’ academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and career development needs
  • Deliver classroom guidance lessons aligned with school counseling standards and district priorities
  • Assist students with goal setting, self-management, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving strategies
  • Support students during times of crisis, transition, conflict, or emotional need
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and confidentiality in accordance with professional standards and district expectations
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, and support staff to identify and respond to student needs
  • Participate in MTSS/problem-solving teams to support intervention planning and student progress monitoring
  • Assist with attendance, behavior, and academic support initiatives designed to improve student success
  • Support the development and implementation of individualized student support plans as needed
  • Help connect students and families with school and community resources
  • Utilize student data to identify trends, monitor student progress, and assist in determining appropriate supports and interventions
  • Collaborate with staff to support proactive approaches to student engagement, attendance, behavior, and academic success
  • Participate in building leadership, student support, and school improvement efforts as assigned
  • Support smooth transitions between grade levels and buildings
  • Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive school environment
  • Support social-emotional learning and character development initiatives
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with families regarding student needs and supports
  • Assist with programs and activities that strengthen student connectedness and school engagement
  • Collaborate with the high school counselor and administration to assist in the development and management of the master schedule
  • Support students and families in course selection and academic planning at the Junior High Level.
  • Help coordinate student schedules and transitions between grade levels and buildings
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development activities
  • Maintain compliance with district policies, state regulations, and ethical standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal

Benefits

  • Contract length and compensation are determined by the Board of Education and align with the negotiated agreement.
