About The Position

Counsels individuals and small groups. Consults with teachers, staff, parents, and other significant people regarding the needs of students. Refers students with significant challenges to appropriate community resources in consultation with parents/guardians. Plans, evaluates, revises, and implements a comprehensive counseling program in conjunction with other guidance counselors from other buildings. Provides parent/adult education opportunities. Provides orientation of students to new situations. Coordinates guidance activities. Participates in developing and implementing the District’s Crisis Prevention Plan. Works with the Curriculum Director in coordinating standardized testing and all other testing programs. Guides and counsels groups and individual students in higher grade levels toward the development of educational and career plans. Coordinates registration at High School grade levels. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in counseling from an approved school counselor preparation program.
  • Current/valid South Dakota School Counselor Certificate.
  • Constant hand-eye/mind-eye coordination.
  • Frequent walking, keyboarding, speaking, writing, bending, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, and turning.
  • Some lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, strategic planning, problem solving, organizational, time management, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, email, and internet.
  • Ability to keep information confidential.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in school setting preferred.
