The School Counselor will provide counseling and support services to students. This role is responsible for coordinating activities related to students’ individual plans for academic, personal/social, and career goals. The counselor will work with students to identify and evaluate their social/emotional abilities, interests, skills, and achievement, both individually and in small groups. They will provide short and long-term therapeutic counseling, lead small groups focused on social skills, and collaborate on Tier 1 school SEL programming. The position involves advocating for students' needs, attending IEP/IAP/SAT meetings, and working with the Social Worker to schedule long-term services. The counselor will also provide parent resources for therapeutic services and appraisal, direct mental health services for students and families, and provide staff resources for external mental health services. Maintaining communication with parents and outside service providers is crucial. The role requires prompt attendance and active participation in all scheduled duty and event roles/assignments, and participation in bimonthly principal/administrative meetings. Data tracking and record maintenance are essential, along with weekly meetings with the Principal/Administration to review strategies and needs. Collaboration with the school nurse for medication management and participation in SAT & IEP meetings are also key responsibilities. The counselor will advise 8th graders on high school applications and transition processes, engage in school improvement efforts, and connect with external resources to stay current with counseling trends. They will also provide professional development to colleagues to enhance their understanding of supporting students’ social-emotional growth and development. Maintaining professional certifications and adhering to a professional work schedule are required. Transparent communication with the principal regarding important situations or incidents is expected. The counselor will conduct individual and small group counseling sessions, make appropriate referrals, provide crisis counseling, and train students as peer mediators, conflict managers, tutors, and mentors. They will proactively plan a curriculum of activities aligned with data and school needs, collaborate with other educators for curriculum infusion, conduct planned small group activities, and deliver workshops for staff, parents, and guardians.
