About The Position

The School Counselor at IDEA Public Schools leads the campus family engagement vision, social emotional learning program, and coordination of mental health and counseling supports for all scholars. This role is crucial in ensuring staff build authentic relationships with students and families, and in maintaining and analyzing data to drive campus strategies. The School Counselor directs and holds all campus team members accountable for their roles in supporting students and families, ultimately aiming for all students to have the academic and social skills needed to achieve their goal of going to and through college. This work ensures schools are safe, emotionally supportive environments where students can learn, grow, and succeed.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related field required
  • Valid TX School Counselor certification or counseling/social work licensure (LMSW, LCSW, LCSW-S, LPC-A, LPC, LMFT-A, LMFT) required
  • Belief in and alignment with IDEA’s mission and values is non-negotiable

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to adjust and adapt to a multitude of situations in the school environment
  • Previous experience in a school or school setting (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Achieves/Owns Campus Goal of Overall Student Persistence by leading the execution of the school vision for retaining all students, directing and managing all stakeholders in their roles and responsibilities in family engagement and student persistence.
  • Leads the planning of and execution of student and family engagement events aligned to the school’s culture, community, and family needs, promoting authentic relationship building.
  • Leads Professional Development for the entire campus to clarify staff roles in family engagement.
  • Manages campus student persistence data, ensuring 100% accuracy and reporting through partnership with the PEIMS team. Notifies stakeholders of data and rationale for student departures to identify and analyze trends.
  • Partners with grade level teams to identify and coordinate interventions for at-risk students, establishing accountability structures.
  • Leads parent conversations and problem-solves to meet student and family needs in collaboration with the campus lead team.
  • Leads family communications platforms (Remind, Smore, Facebook).
  • Administers parent surveys (Spring and Fall) to gather feedback on communication and events, analyzes input, and creates strategic plans.
  • Administers student surveys (Spring and Fall) to gather feedback on the IDEA experience.
  • Ensures 90% New Student Persistence by partnering with the Enrollment Specialist and APO for high-quality onboarding, directing campus team members in family engagement for new student retention, and leading new parent events.
  • Owns campus new student persistence, ensuring 100% data accuracy and reporting through partnership with the SIS/Registrar and stakeholders. Notifies stakeholders of data and rationale for student departures.
  • Ensures new families and students build community and a sense of belonging within the first 10 days through onboarding structures.
  • Achieves 90% Documentation Compliance by documenting at least ten hours of direct student services weekly, including all interventions and crises/critical incidents.
  • Collaborates with community agencies to coordinate services within the school system.
  • Utilizes Student & Family Survey data twice a year to assess campus climate and culture.
  • Serves as a member of the campus crisis response team to ensure student or family social/emotional needs are met.
  • Connects students and families to community resources and acts as a liaison between community support and the campus.
  • Ensures 90% of assigned teachers use Move This World social emotional learning curriculum with fidelity.
  • Leads teacher and campus training on Move This World curriculum and implementation expectations.
  • Identifies and utilizes best practice strategies to foster a culture of excitement around integrating Mental Health curriculum.
  • Conducts regular observations of Move This World blocks and provides feedback to teachers.
  • Tracks curriculum progress and sends weekly updates.
  • Conducts BOY and EOY assessments on Mental Health competencies, school climate, safety, and sense of belonging, and creates action steps.
  • Ensures 80% of Risk & Threat Assessments have a Safety Plan and/or Re-entry Meetings documented.
  • Ensures all crisis responses are documented within the appropriate timeframe.
  • Manages accurate data tracking of campus crises across all systems through periodic audits.
  • Presents data to the monthly CCT meeting with updates and suggested revisions for risk & threat assessments.
  • Collaborates with CCT Members to ensure Risk & Threat Assessment Checklist fidelity.
  • Ensures 100% of CCT Members are trained in Risk & Threat Assessment Protocols.
  • Creates Campus Crisis Binders and conducts walkthroughs with CCT members to ensure understanding and appropriate use of documents.
