About The Position

The School Bus Monitor plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students during transportation. This position requires strong communication skills to interact effectively with students, drivers, parents, and school staff. The monitor is responsible for supervising students on the bus, assisting with special needs students, maintaining cleanliness, and adhering to safety protocols. Regular evaluations will assess adherence to these responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Punctual attendance.
  • Ability to sit in a designated location on the bus for monitoring.
  • Alertness at all times to student needs.
  • Prohibition from sleeping or using electronic devices for personal use while on duty with students.
  • Familiarity with the emergency evacuation plan.
  • Knowledge of the bus route.
  • Ability to maintain a copy of the route and student emergency information.
  • Respect for student confidentiality.
  • Ability to maintain the cleanliness of the inside of the school bus.
  • Ability to promptly report discipline issues via written referral.
  • Ability to report incidents resulting in injury via an incident report.
  • Ability to comply with driver's hand signals.
  • Must wear safety vests at all times while on the bus.
  • Strong communication skills, including verbal expression, written word, body language, and facial expressions.

Nice To Haves

  • Training in the use of lift and tie-down systems for students in wheelchairs and mobility devices (for special needs monitors).
  • Training by a physician or local system nurse/designee for transporting medically fragile students.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain punctual attendance, being on the bus from the first student pickup to the last student drop-off.
  • Sit in a designated location on the bus to monitor all children and perform periodic walk-throughs.
  • Remain alert at all times to student needs and interact when necessary, refraining from sleeping or using electronic devices for personal use.
  • For special needs monitors: be trained in the use of lift and tie-down systems for students in wheelchairs and mobility devices, and double-check all safety restraints when loading students.
  • Become familiar with the emergency evacuation plan and be prepared to evacuate the bus in emergencies.
  • For medically fragile students: be trained by a physician, local system nurse, or designee.
  • Keep a copy of the route and student emergency information, including parent/guardian contact numbers.
  • Respect student confidentiality and refrain from discussing acquired information with unauthorized co-workers.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the inside of the school bus, working as a team with the driver.
  • For special needs monitors: ensure all unused equipment is properly stored.
  • Promptly report discipline issues to the driver and/or District discipline officer via written referral, ensuring accuracy and legibility with timestamps.
  • Report incidents resulting in student injury by completing and submitting an incident report to dispatch.
  • For elementary bus monitors: exit the bus with students when they must cross the road to load/unload, or when a group of two or more students load/unload on the door side and cross the road.
  • Comply with the driver's hand signals with students during loading and unloading.
  • Wear safety vests at all times while on the bus.
