About The Position

Chesterfield County Public Schools is actively seeking school bus drivers to join their team and serve a critical need by safely transporting students to and from school. This position offers a full-time work schedule with the option to take summers off, or a part-time position with flexible hours. No prior experience is required, and you will be paid while training for your CDL. The starting pay is $25.10/hr. (effective July 1, 2026), with potential for higher pay (up to $32.84/hr.) with previous CDL experience. Additionally, there's an opportunity to bring your children on the bus or drive your child's bus route.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • At least three years of driving experience.
  • A driving record that meets the standards of CCPS School Board Policy 5430.
  • Successful completion of First Aid and CPR courses.
  • Successful completion of auto-injectable epinephrine training (EpiPen).
  • Successful completion of Defensive Driving Course.
  • Meet physical qualifications for school bus drivers.
  • Successful completion of state-approved school bus driver training course.
  • Successful completion of FBI fingerprint background investigation.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License.
  • Working knowledge of state and local school bus operation, laws and regulations and county geography.
  • Working knowledge of first aid procedures including CPR.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a large vehicle safely and punctually in all weather conditions, using safe and defensive driving methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain bus discipline and relate well to children, parents and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide constant attention and assistance to a number of children at the same time, including children with special health conditions or disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting children.
  • Demonstrated ability to give and follow instructions, work well under stressful conditions or emergencies and maintain confidentiality.
  • Successful completion of State Police Criminal History Investigation.
  • Successful completion of Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation.
  • Successful completion of Tuberculosis Screening/Test.

Responsibilities

  • Performs responsible and skilled work in transporting students to and from school and other school-sponsored activities.
  • Safely operates all types of school buses and maintains a regular schedule for picking up and dropping off students.
  • Makes daily safety inspections of the vehicle and equipment, ensuring regular maintenance and cleanliness.
  • Assists students on and off the vehicle and enforces safety and conduct regulations.
  • Maintains records and prepares required reports, including those on student disciplinary actions, incidents, or injuries.
  • Participates in and successfully passes all required training.
  • Provides basic first aid and/or prescribed health care as necessary for students.
  • Completes and submits monthly and weekly reports, including pre-trip inspection forms, mileage, student attendance, route forms, maintenance defect reports, student conduct referrals, vandalism and injury reports.
  • Communicates daily with the transportation supervisor, coordinators, and office manager regarding route revisions, student changes, or other transportation-related matters.
  • Communicates periodically with police, fire, rescue personnel, school administrators, teachers, parents, or other student transportation personnel regarding incidents, accidents, or as directed by the supervisor.
  • Provides direction to school bus attendants.
