About The Position

The School Bus Driver is responsible for enforcing all laws, rules, and policies authorized by the Safety and Security Department. This role involves transporting students and staff to various locations by car, van, or bus for recreational and educational purposes. The driver will also perform and document preventative maintenance on vehicles.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year’s work-related experience.
  • Valid State driver’s license and Commercial Driver’s License in the state of employment with Passenger endorsement and an acceptable driving record; or, the ability to obtain such license.

Responsibilities

  • Safely transports students by bus and automobile to various vocational sites, medical centers, recreational activities, courts, etc.
  • Ensure all vehicles are equipped with fire extinguishers, emergency warning lights, roadside flares/reflectors, emergency contact numbers, and well maintained first-aid kits.
  • Enforces all authorized laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Operates motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds and up to 26,000 pounds to include passenger shuttle vans (10-20 passenger capacity), cargo vans and 30-40 passenger buses. These vehicles may be equipped with air brakes.
  • Vehicles are driven for long and short distances to transport and pick up articles, supplies, materials, and passengers.
  • Inspects and reports on the mechanical condition of vehicles; clean and inspect vehicles weekly.
  • Maintains accurate and complete trip reports of each use of any vehicle.
  • Investigates vehicular accidents.
  • Assist in preparation of written accident reports and maintains daily security log.
  • Enforces center pass policy.
  • Vehicles are sometimes driven through congested areas where drivers must exercise caution when backing to load or unload at docks, ramps, or similar locations.
  • Assures that cargo is properly located, distributed, and secured, and that vehicle is not loaded beyond capacity.
  • On occasion may operate special equipment such as manual winches and tie-downs.
  • Enforces all safety rules and regulations in accordance with existing Forest Service and OSHA requirements related to personnel, facilities, and equipment.
  • Must meet OSHA safety requirements applicable to Contractor and Government furnished equipment.
  • Regularly monitor the assigned areas for safety hazards and submit work orders for any needed repairs or maintenance.
  • Operates government vehicles to transport students to and from off-site activities.
