About The Position

Drivergent, Inc. is seeking a School Bus Driver Trainee for their Sterling Heights, MI location. This role involves in-house training to become a full-time school bus driver responsible for the safe transportation of students. The position requires reliability, a focus on safety, and the ability to adapt to a changing environment. Successful candidates will ensure students and families are transported safely, routes are operated on time, and customer expectations are exceeded.

Requirements

  • Ability to take and pass Continuing Education Class.
  • Ability to tolerate stressful situations.
  • Able to understand and have empathy for children and persons with disability.
  • Extensive knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to operate and navigate a full-size or special-need school bus.
  • Ability to effectively operate a GPS.
  • Ability to work outside in various climates and weather conditions.
  • Must be reliable, and capable of working a flexible schedule.
  • Must practice defensive driving at all times and avoid vehicular and industrial accidents by practicing safe driving and work habits.
  • Proficient in English sufficient enough to read road signs and communicate with personnel.
  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Nice To Haves

  • Upon completion of training, Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Chauffeur Driver’s License prior to training class.
  • Passenger, School Bus, and Air Brake Endorsements prior to training class.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safe and reliable transportation of students, including all duties connected to operating a school bus per all applicable client district policies & state/federal laws.
  • Ability to manage and maintain all students on the bus in a calm and safe manner.
  • Report to duty on time and maintain route on time but in a safe manner.
  • Physically assist passengers in evacuation of the vehicle in case of emergency.
  • Inform all appropriate personnel of problems/procedures/incidents per Company/District policy.
  • Keep the interior of the assigned vehicle clean and presentable.
  • Present a neat and professional personal appearance at all times.
  • Completes all required paperwork (including route change sheets, timecards, vehicle repair requests).
  • Maintain a professional attitude with parents, students, other staff members, fellow employees, supervisors, customers, and passengers while always promoting company goodwill.
  • Safely and efficiently utilizes vehicle equipment, including wheelchair lifts, radios and emergency equipment.
  • Conduct all pre-trip and post-trip inspections as required.
