VPM is seeking a School-Based Mental Health Clinician - Autism & Neurodevelopmental Disorders to provide short-term, school-based tele-therapy to K–12 students across Virginia through a state-funded initiative in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). This specialty-specific role is intended for clinicians with focused training and clinical experience supporting children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental differences. This is a specialty-specific posting intended to recruit clinicians with focused experience, advanced training, and/or certifications aligned to this clinical area. Candidates should be prepared to provide details regarding relevant certifications, specialized training, and direct experience with the identified population during the screening process.

Requirements

  • Licensed in Virginia as an LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or equivalent clinical license preferred
  • Candidates with strong specialized certification and training in autism and neurodevelopmental treatment will be considered
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience working with children, adolescents, or school-aged youth
  • Demonstrated experience supporting autistic youth and/or youth with neurodevelopmental disorders in therapeutic, educational, community, or behavioral health settings
  • Strong developmentally responsive and neurodiversity-affirming clinical practice
  • Strong time management, organization, and documentation skills
  • Self-directed with a strong virtual presence and professionalism in remote settings
  • Commitment to culturally responsive, trauma-informed, strengths-based care
  • Ability to adapt therapeutic methods based on individual communication and support needs
  • A private, quiet workspace suitable for professional work
  • Reliable high-speed internet and ability to use required systems/tools
  • Comfort working independently while staying connected through remote collaboration

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with emotional regulation, social skills support, caregiver collaboration, and behaviorally complex presentations preferred
  • Experience in school-based therapy, pediatric behavioral health, community mental health, family systems work, or telehealth strongly preferred
  • Understanding of behavioral interventions and school-based supports (IEPs, 504 plans)
  • Autism Specialist Certification (various recognized programs)
  • BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) or BCBA coursework/training (preferred but not required)
  • RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) or behavioral intervention training
  • Training in Social Skills Interventions
  • Training in Executive Functioning Interventions
  • CBT adapted for autism
  • Other specialized training in neurodevelopmental disorders

Responsibilities

  • Deliver individual tele-therapy sessions for K–12 students referred by participating schools
  • Provide specialized support for students with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders who may present with anxiety, emotional regulation needs, social challenges, behavioral concerns, school stress, or family-related concerns
  • Support students in building social-emotional awareness, coping skills, flexibility, self-advocacy, and functional emotional regulation
  • Deliver culturally responsive, strengths-based, and neurodiversity-affirming care
  • Adapt evidence-based interventions to align with developmental level, communication style, sensory needs, and individual strengths
  • Coordinate with school counselors, family resource managers, caregivers, and administrative teams to promote continuity of care (e.g., BCBAs, special education teams)
  • Engage families when appropriate to reinforce therapeutic strategies across settings
  • Maintain professional, timely communication with school partners and internal VPM teams
  • Participate in clinical consultation, supervision, and multidisciplinary case discussions as needed
  • Complete all clinical documentation, including intake, progress, and discharge notes, within 48 hours
  • Ensure compliance with licensure requirements, HIPAA, FERPA, mandated reporting obligations, and program-specific standards
  • Support outcomes tracking and program reporting through case summaries and required documentation
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Attend required onboarding, internal meetings, supervision sessions, and trainings (as applicable)
  • Notify the team as soon as possible regarding delays, absences, or scheduling conflicts
  • Maintain timely, professional communication during scheduled work hours
  • Uphold remote-work standards, including a private workspace and reliable internet connection
