About The Position

Responsible for the professional, medical treatment of students in the Edna Karr High School DePaul Community Health Center Clinic and other school clinics when needed. This includes early detection of physical problems, health evaluations and plans, and disease prevention. The role assists in promoting health-education and immunization programs, maintains clinical records, and coordinates vision, hearing, and orthopedic screening and health assessments. The nurse also assists teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education.

Requirements

  • Registered nurse RN certification required.
  • Current nursing license required.
  • Possess a sense of discipline to work with accepted nursing and medical standards.
  • Solid verbal and written communications skills.
  • Experience and desire to work in a holistic health care environment serving the under-insured and uninsured.
  • Demonstrate time management skills and set priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • 3-5 years working in a school setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional, medical treatment to students.
  • Perform early detection of physical problems and health evaluations/plans.
  • Engage in disease prevention activities.
  • Assist in promoting health-education and immunization programs.
  • Maintain clinical records.
  • Coordinate vision, hearing, and orthopedic screening and health assessments.
  • Assist teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education.
  • Interview patients, measure vital signs, and record information in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Perform select clinical duties including patient services and certain lab procedures.
  • Maintain patient's medical records in an orderly manner and report abnormal results.
  • Assist with prior authorizations and medical refills when directed.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for examinations, keeping medical equipment clean and orderly.
  • Monitor supplies in each examination room.
  • Maintain a neat and clean workspace.
  • Escort assigned patients and fully prepare them for visits, including taking vital signs, completing Health Risk Appraisal, performing in-house labs, reviewing charts for accuracy, ensuring diagnostic testing results and consultant reports are scanned, reviewing health provider orders, administering medications, performing treatments, and documenting outcomes.
  • Assist behavioral health providers, consultants, and patients as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly environment, including cleaning medical instruments.
  • Use Standard Precautions and Needlestick Precautions with all patients, specimens, and equipment.
  • Support policies, procedures, and supervisory decisions within the Health Center.
  • Accept supervision and feedback from administration.
  • Participate in continuing education programs as directed.
  • Use established channels of communication and proper lines of authority for problem-solving.
  • Be knowledgeable of and apply the Vision, Mission, and Core Values of the DCHC and Ascension health.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor, including work attire and appearance.
  • Assist in documentation of incidents and untoward events.
  • Participate in safety programs and disaster/fire drills.
  • Maintain an acceptable attendance record and provide proper justification for absences and tardiness.
  • Document overtime including justification.
  • Attend DCHC general staff meetings, department meetings, and annual retreats.
  • Be knowledgeable of patient’s rights and responsibilities and assure the same.
  • Maintain and assure confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Possess knowledge of community agencies to help students and their families.
  • Possess knowledge of district policies and procedures.
