About The Position

Under the direction of the Director, the Teacher will supervise and effectively lead students in a variety of activities. Teachers will provide a safe and nurturing environment for campers; will be actively involved in all School Age Child Care (SACC) activities and will maintain a positive attitude at all times. Teachers will represent the YMCA positively to the students and families. In addition to normal weekday hours, School age staff must be available to work a minimum of 13 vacation camp days that occur during the year when school is not in session.

Requirements

  • Desire and ability to work with children. Previous experience working with children preferably in a child care, youth program or day camp setting.
  • At least 17 years of age for teachers and 20 for head teachers.
  • Completion of required training within 1 week of hire as well as obtaining any certifications required for position prior to start.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring first aid, and to continually supervise campers.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, supervise and work with assigned ages and skill levels and provide necessary instructions to enforce safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises a group of children.
  • Plans and implements program activities which are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Ensures that administrative functions are performed including attendance, incident/accident reports, parent communication and medication appointments.
  • Guide and provide assistance to other SACC staff working within the program. Work with the Director to ensure program and staffing quality.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
