About The Position

The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is seeking an Elementary School Principal to manage the daily operations, maintenance of schedules, and overall personnel needs of the Elementary Department. This role fosters a safe, collaborative environment for students, staff, and families. Reporting to the Chief Educational Programs Officer (CEPO), the principal is responsible for interviewing, orienting, and evaluating faculty, leading department meetings, and implementing professional development. Key duties include coordinating student placements, monitoring lesson plans, overseeing standardized testing, and enforcing IEP implementation and data collection. The position also drives the school’s master schedule, supports the bilingual education philosophy and language and literacy planning, manages school discipline and safety protocols, and monitors student and staff well-being and attendance.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Education of Deaf students, Education of Deaf students with additional disabilities, or Special Education.
  • Three years of successful classroom teaching experience with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
  • Fluent in American Sign Language and written English.
  • Superior interpersonal and active listening skills.

  • Knowledge of Deaf Community is preferred.
  • Must hold the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Administrator II certification or Supervisors of Instruction, Assistant Principals, and Principals licensure or be eligible to obtain Supervisors of Instruction, Assistant Principals, and Principals licensure in the required timeframe.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of the Elementary Department, including daily coverage, subbing, and support of department needs.
  • Maintain daily schedules for the Elementary Department.
  • Serve students, teachers, staff, and families.
  • Assist in hiring and orientation of new faculty.
  • Observe and evaluate staff performance.
  • Direct staff and department meetings.
  • Plan and implement professional development training and in-service events.
  • Coordinate staff assignments and student placements.
  • Create and improve the school’s master schedule.
  • Arrange school functions.
  • Support the bilingual education philosophy and language and literacy planning and policy.
  • Assist with classroom management.
  • Promote consistent discipline within the school.
  • Enforce IEP implementation and data collection.
  • Supervise state and local standardized testing to ensure compliance.
  • Monitor weekly units and lesson plans, ensuring appropriate educational objectives, strategies, and activities.
  • Adhere to the school’s safety protocols, progressive disciplinary action, and due process.
  • Monitor and maintain student and staff well-being, including attendance and progress reports.
  • Collaborate closely with the Campus Chief Educational Programs Officer (CEPO) and its office, as well as with other programs in the school.
  • Assume other duties as assigned by CEPO.
