About The Position

The scholarship counselor position within Louisiana State University’s Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships will play a key collaborative role in advancing the University and meeting the student enrollment objectives. The individual, with general oversight from the Assistant Director, will be responsible for maintaining scholarship communication with current and prospective students and families.

  • As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
  • All candidates must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of hire and maintain that valid work authorization throughout employment. Changes in laws, regulations, or government policies may impact the university’s ability to employ individuals in certain positions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or Business-related field.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for primary customer service assistance to prospective and continuing students, parents and departmental contacts. This includes resolving problems and providing support associated with the administration of scholarship programs via phone, email or in person interactions.
  • Represents the office as assigned and presents scholarship and financial aid information at orientation sessions or other presentation opportunities for student and parent groups.
  • Acts as liaison between our office and faculty/staff, students and the public to provide information and resources regarding scholarship activities and programs. Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Assists with departmental communication to colleges regarding scholarship aid packages and supporting departments in their scholarship awarding process.
  • Act as the primary liaison for the Enrollment Management call center as it relates to scholarship matters. Provides ongoing training to call center students for the scholarships unit.
  • Counsels and advises prospective and enrolled students in all matters pertaining to university, state, federal and donor scholarship programs.
  • The employee must be accurate in describing scholarship policies, criteria and procedures. Must be responsive to students’ concerns and needs by providing excellent customer service.
  • Supports colleges awarding departmental scholarships which includes the responsibility of making decisions in releasing disbursement to students. Responsible for the initial review of all documents submitted by departments for the purpose of establishing scholarship programs and program rules in the SAE system.
  • Coordinates with Sponsored program accounting, LSU Foundation and Bursar operations to establish new scholarships for university administration.
  • Assists with the administration of University scholarships including departmental, Foundation, and academic awards. Reviews, approves, and enters award information for various scholarships to individual student records in the appropriate database. Supports selection and processing of awards administered by Financial aid and Scholarships.
  • Maintains all files for scholarships programs and assures audit efficiency.
  • Maintains accuracy of the Scholarships unit policy and procedures manual.
  • Responsible for processing reports and the maintenance of accuracy in all records.
  • Manages daily operations for assigned scholarships programs.
  • Assist with institutional aid math process for the A&M campus. This includes matching students with institutional scholarships to foundation scholarships, as well as working with all departments on campus to offer a centralized swap process.
  • Including, but not limited to assigned committees and outreach projects.
  • Represent LSU and the Office of Enrollment Management at professional functions and recruiting events. Represents LSU and EMSS at orientation events.
