About The Position

The Scanner Operator is responsible for capturing 3D scan data on production parts, tooling, and validation samples using both the laser articulated arm scanner and the structured light scanner (SLS). This role supplies high-quality scan data to Mechanical Inspectors for downstream PolyWorks extraction, alignment, and reporting. During scanner downtime, the Scanner Operator backfills the Quality Inspector group on routine handheld inspection work to keep the lab productive across all conditions.

Requirements

• High School Diploma
• Prior experience operating 3D scanning equipment preferred (laser articulated arm, structured light, or similar).
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and steady, deliberate hand technique for manual scan acquisition.
• Ability to follow detailed scan procedures, fixturing instructions, and visual coverage criteria.
• Familiarity with handheld inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, height gages, etc.) for inspector backfill duties.
• Basic computer literacy; comfortable navigating scan acquisition software and managing files on a network drive.
• Ability to lift and reposition parts up to 50 lbs and to stand for extended periods during scan acquisition.
• Strong attention to detail and consistent process discipline.

Responsibilities

• Operate the laser articulated arm scanner to acquire 3D point cloud data on production parts, tooling, and engineering samples.
• Manually sweep the laser line across part surfaces using consistent technique — comparable to a steady, overlapping spray-paint pass — to ensure full coverage and uniform point density.
• Manage probe standoff distance, scan angle, and pass overlap to keep data within the system’s validated operating envelope.
• Operate the structured light scanner (SLS) to acquire automated turntable-based scans of small-to-mid-size parts.
• Mount and orient samples on the turntable per fixturing instructions, initiate the automated scan routine, and monitor the capture for errors or incomplete data.
• Perform daily pre-scan setup including system warm-up, artifact verification, and workspace preparation.
• Save and organize scan files to designated network locations following established naming and folder conventions.
• Hand off acquired scan data to Mechanical Inspectors for PolyWorks alignment and feature extraction.
• Maintain scanner equipment in clean, calibrated, and ready condition; report system anomalies to the supervisor or CMM Programmer.
• Track scan throughput, equipment status, and any non-conformances encountered during data capture.
• Backfill the Quality Inspector group during scanner downtime by performing routine inspection on calipers, micrometers, height gages, and other handheld instruments as assigned.
