About The Position

The Scaffold Builder / Insulator A is responsible for the layout, figuring material needs, building of simple scaffolding and insulation systems, including directing other members of the crew. Duties include safety, quality, and notifying the Supervisor of material and equipment needs. This role may involve component scaffold building/insulation but does not require lead man qualifications. Manhattan Mechanical Services is a merit shop contractor supporting a team working environment, and employees may be asked to perform other qualified duties outside their normal work function.

Requirements

  • Two or more years of experience in scaffold building or equivalent knowledge.
  • Experience in the Petrochemical Industry or related field.
  • Climbing in a proper manner including following 100 percent tie-off policy.
  • Working knowledge of Manhattan Mechanical Services scaffolding systems including system scaffold, tube and clamp, and decking systems.
  • Ability to read and understand drawings.
  • Working knowledge of safe rigging practices.
  • Must be able to work well as a part of a team.
  • Must be willing to provide guidance and onsite training experience to lesser experienced crafts and laborers.
  • Must comply with Manhattan Mechanical Services drug and alcohol policy.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and stairways.
  • Must be able to carry 50lbs of tools and or materials.
  • Must be able to work at elevated heights as well as in confined spaces, towers, drums, vessels, excavations, etc.
  • Must be able to work extended hours on feet on uneven surfaces, dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.
  • Must be clean shaven and able to work while wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment, when required.
  • Must be able to pass physical examination, pre-employment if necessary and as required by Manhattan Mechanical Services.
  • Must be able to read and understand safety instructions, signs, labels and permits in English.
  • Must be able to pass applicable site-specific training.
  • Knowledge of refinery and chemical plant hazards which may require special precautions and PPE, such as Sulfuric, H2S and HF.
  • Must undertake the appropriate safety/environmental training commensurate with the position and location.
  • Must have valid driver’s license or other government issued identification.

  • Completed component scaffold training course.

Responsibilities

  • Constructs and/or assembles scaffolding in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards, including OSHA.
  • Designs and builds normal scaffolding systems less than 50 feet in height.
  • Directs other members of the scaffold crew.
  • Safe use of hand and power tools.
  • Reads prints and understands material takeoffs.
  • Field determines measurements, fabricates and installs insulation and covering systems.
  • Selects types and size of insulation, covering and related materials according to job specifications.
  • Consults supervisor or lead man regarding working loads prior to construction.
  • Recognizes hazards regarding scaffolding installation.
  • Inspects and selects the proper materials and locations for the scaffolding sites.
  • Constructs work platforms using the proper materials.
  • Uses wrench or hammer to erect steel system type scaffolding, using tubes, ladders and braces held together by fittings such as couplers (clamps) or system connectors.
  • Climbs and inspects all completed scaffolds and tags either green or yellow for use by others.
  • Maintains housekeeping of job site.
  • Prioritizes tasks.
  • Ensures all tools and materials used by his or her crew are returned to their proper place at the end of the shift.
  • Keeps track of all components and materials for his or her job.
  • Works safely at all times.
  • Provides guidance and on-the-job training experience to the Scaffold Builder / Insulator B and helpers.
  • Completes JSAs (Job Safety Analyses).
  • Fully participates in health, safety, quality, and environmental processes.
  • Acts as an ambassador for Manhattan Mechanical Services to the client, other contractors, and the public.
