About The Position

MDA Space is seeking an experienced Electrical Power System Engineer to support the concept, detailed design, analysis, verification and integration of electrical power subsystems (solar arrays, power‑conditioning units, batteries, distribution & regulation) for our current and next‑generation remote sensing and communications satellites. The role works closely with payload, bus, thermal, structural and mission‑systems multidisciplinary teams responsible for delivering high‑performance, reliable EPS solutions to commercial, government, and defense customers.

Requirements

  • Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace or Physics with 5 + years of EPS system design experience on LEO/MEO platforms.
  • Deep knowledge of spacecraft bus subsystems and their interactions.
  • Experience with power‑electronics design and power management hardware.
  • Strong understanding of aerospace system engineering fundamentals
  • Hands-on individual who can support systems integration processes and capability to test systems and resolve problems.
  • Experience with Confluence and JIRA
  • Demonstrated capability to efficiently work with little supervision
  • Ability to distill complex problems to fundamentals to solve with analysis, similarity, or creativity.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in English; knowledge of French will be considered an asset (Contact with clients outside Quebec and work on deliverables in English).

Responsibilities

  • Define EPS architecture (generation, storage, distribution) that satisfies mission power budget, mass, volume and reliability constraints.
  • Perform trade‑studies (e.g., solar cell type, battery chemistry, regulator topology).
  • Generate system requirements, functional flow block diagrams.
  • Develop the Interface Control Documents (ICD) and Design Description.
  • Perform requirement management and maintain bidirectional traceability throughout the program life cycle.
  • Size solar arrays, power‑conditioning units, battery packs, and power distribution units.
  • Build and validate high‑fidelity electrical models for satellite modes, FMECA, Fault detection…
  • Conduct & maintain power budget models, load‑flow, thermal‑power coupling, and survivability analyses (e.g., eclipse, safe‑mode, fault‑tolerant).
  • Present technical status, risk analyses, and trade‑study results to senior management.
  • Interface with spacecraft bus teams (power, thermal, structure, avionics).
  • Develop/maintain high‑fidelity power models for mission analysis (e.g., orbit raising, station‑keeping, de‑orbit).
  • Develop tools for power efficiency & optimisation for the satellite.
  • Support B&P (Phase 0 & pre-phase A).
  • Author verification plans, test matrices, and validation procedures for unit & EPS subsystem tests.
  • Support ground‑test & integration campaigns, fueling, thermal vacuum, EMI/EMC, and spacecraft‑level integration.
  • Analyse test data, close out anomalies, and update design baselines.
  • Support FSW integration
  • Mentor, guide, lead a multidisciplinary team of junior or intermediate system engineers & interns

  • Act as Continuous Improvement stakeholder
  • Contribute to MDA’s knowledge‑base, process enhancements, and standards development.
  • Maintain design and safety standards.
  • Ensure all artefacts, analysis, software, documentations and deliverables are version controlled in PLM environment.
  • Support design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, MRR/TRR…etc.).
  • Support Technology Road‑Mapping & Innovation
  • Support launch‑site interface checklists with LVI responsible engineer, pre‑launch checkout procedures, and early‑orbit checkout scripts.
  • Provide real‑time engineering support during launch, on‑orbit commissioning, anomaly investigations and contingency operations.
  • Support SOOH development and associated operator trainings.
