About The Position

Performs heavy manual work in the collection and disposal of garbage and refuse. Employees work as a member of a crew, riding equipment driven by a Sanitation Equipment Operator over an established route, and loads and unloading refuse. Employees are subject to the hazards of sanitation work including working in outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, atmospheric conditions, oils, skin irritants, and narrow passageways. Work is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under the direction of a Sanitation Equipment Operator who assures safe collection activities; the Public Works Manager reviews work by observation to determine the effectiveness of collection duties and overall effectiveness and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License
  • Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in the loading and unloading of garbage and refuse along an assigned route.
  • Some knowledge of City solid waste collection regulations.
  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of refuse collection work.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to cooperate and work as a team member in carrying out assignments.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate equipment and distinguish safety hazards of the work which may affect self and others.

  • Possess a valid North Carolina Class B Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Works as a member of a garbage and refuse collection crew following established routes; rides back of a rear loader and gets on and off vehicle.
  • May occasionally have to operate other city equipment and vehicles.
  • Collects garbage and refuse from curb sides and yards; empties refuse containers into a loader packer truck; operates packer mechanism; assists in emptying load at appropriate location.
  • Collects and disposes of yard waste; cleans up street area.
  • Collects furniture, appliances and other items from the curbside; lifts heavy materials into bed of truck.
  • Goes to back yards of disabled and senior citizens unable to roll carts to the road; positions carts properly for side arm loader or loads garbage into trucks.
  • Informs supervisor of substandard refuse containers.
  • Assists in greasing, washing and cleaning of sanitation trucks.
  • Maintains good relationship with the public through respect to individual property and answering questions about proper items for disposal.
  • Assists with other sanitation or public works crews as needed, especially in weather emergency situations.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Assists in the removal of ice and snow and dead animals.
