About The Position

Under general supervision, the Sanitation Operator performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s transfer station. This position is a tentative “At-Will” appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent AND one (1) year of experience in sanitation or waste disposal which includes operating heavy equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Opens and closes transfer station gates according to schedule; prepares facility for operation by conducting daily safety inspections; prepares facility for closing in accordance with established procedures.
  • Supervises the separation of trash by Transfer Station patrons; explains Transfer Station procedures to the public; monitors and screens cargo to prevent the disposal of prohibited materials and ensure safety procedures are followed.
  • Inspects and collects appropriate dump vouchers from Transfer Station customers; accounts for fees by checking transfer station vouchers; files all documents and vouchers received throughout the day.
  • Completes all forms and enters computer information as required; maintains records of Transfer Station operations.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and neatness of the Transfer Station facility; assists with snow plowing and snow removal operations when required.
  • Sanitizes and cleans equipment, tools and work areas as required; performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; inspects fluid levels and tire pressure on vehicles and makes adjustments as needed.
  • Operates specialized equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, and loaders.
  • Performs necessary painting, yard work, janitorial, and housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.
