Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing automotive equipment operation.
  • Familiarity with the operating and repair characteristics of heavy public works equipment.
  • Understanding of the component parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs of various machinery.
  • Well-rounded comprehension of the city’s layout, including streets and alleyways.
  • Ability to service equipment and perform minor repairs.
  • Capacity to understand and execute both written and oral instructions.
  • Strong reporting skills for maintaining records of activities.
  • Physical strength and agility to operate equipment, especially under challenging weather conditions.
  • Manual dexterity for handling machinery effectively.
  • Completion of high school diploma or GED is desirable.
  • Some experience in the operation and routine maintenance of trucks, specialized automotive equipment, or related automotive equipment.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license from the State of Tennessee.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in challenging semi-skilled work that involves operating residential, commercial, and recycling sanitation equipment.
  • Efficiently load and unload collected materials.
  • Ensure the safe operation of specialized maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Operate front-loading and rear-loading vehicles.
  • Manage recycling collection equipment.
  • Utilize heavy machinery such as backhoes and forklifts.
  • Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and skill in handling complex equipment.
  • Perform tasks independently while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Oversee subordinate operators.
  • Maintain a clean and environmentally friendly community.
