About The Position

Alternately operate a sanitation truck and assist in pick up of refuse/yard waste and recycling. This role involves driving collection vehicles, supervising crews, maintaining logs, conducting vehicle inspections, and handling customer interactions. The position requires working in various weather conditions and may involve physical demands. Employees are considered essential and may be required to perform duties outside their normal job description in emergencies.

Requirements

  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement or proof of valid permit issued prior to February 7, 2022.
  • Must obtain Florida Class B CDL within 6 months of employment.
  • Valid Class E driver license.
  • Must obtain Florida Class E driver license within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Driving history for the past three (3) years must reflect no violations of a driving related felony offense, or driving under the influence (DUI) which includes both drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, or hit and run involving an occupied vehicle or attended property, or an accumulation of traffic violations, plus three (3) points for each attendance at driving school (regardless of whether points were assessed against the license) where the penalty points do not exceed twelve (12).
  • Position is considered at-risk for exposure to Hepatitis B during performance of regular duties.
  • An acceptance/declination of vaccination form is required.
  • This position is covered under the D.O.T. regulations for pre-employment drug testing and inquiries.
  • If selected, an essential functions assessment is required to measure the ability to safely perform the required physical demands.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in refuse pick up, to include side and rear loading compaction type refuse collection vehicles.
  • Willingness to adopt AI and emerging technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Alternately drive vehicles utilized for collection of refuse or recycled materials.
  • Lift in excess of 50 pounds of canned or bagged refuse/yard waste in a continuing effort throughout the work day.
  • Supervise the crew assigned to the collection route when driving, including temporary personnel.
  • Maintain a log of the dumps at the transfer station, tonnage, customer counts and time logs.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspection of vehicles and complete reports.
  • Tag violations and improper refuse and recycling.
  • Hand out pertinent educational brochures, dealing tactfully with the citizens.
  • Report, via radio, of daily activity status, reports, etc.
  • Exercise proper safety measures when working in congested traffic areas with potentially dangerous equipment.
  • Work in all types of weather and walk extreme distances when not driving the vehicle.
  • Complete the required trainings as specified within the City’s Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Be available for emergency call-outs.
