About The Position

Join our Sanitation & Streets team and help keep our city safe, clean, and running smoothly. This hands-on role involves operating large vehicles, performing essential public works tasks, and adapting to a variety of conditions to support daily operations. You’ll play a direct and meaningful role in maintaining the city’s infrastructure and neighborhoods. You’ll work with a supportive team committed to improving processes, efficiency, and public service, with opportunities to gain experience using heavy equipment, assisting in street repair, supporting snow operations, and more.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license and acceptable driving record per City Policy.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License (Class B, C, with air brakes).
  • Possession of a Tanker (N) endorsement within 6 months of employment.
  • Minimum of two years of recent paid work experience operating trucks greater than 26,000 GVW, or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and driving experience to demonstrate the necessary background.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in all weather and environmental conditions.
  • Strong reliability, communication skills, and willingness to learn new tasks.
  • Ability to safely operate trucks, equipment, and motor vehicles.
  • Flexibility to respond to emergencies and changing job assignments.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and the team.

Responsibilities

  • Manually lift and load refuse and recyclables into collection vehicles.
  • Operate large trucks, motorized vehicles, and special-purpose equipment safely and effectively.
  • Collect, haul, and deliver a variety of materials such as refuse, snow, leaves, brush, sand, gravel, and salt.
  • Load and unload trucks using hoists, pumps, lifts, loaders, winches, and other equipment.
  • Perform emergency operations including snow plowing, snow removal, and salt/sanding operations.
  • Assist at job sites with tasks such as street repairs, catch basin clean-outs, asphalt and tar patching, and construction support.
  • Transport personnel throughout the city.
  • Maintain simple records, complete reports, and recommend process improvements.
  • Support initiatives such as strategic planning, LEAN, and innovation projects.
  • Maintain prompt and predictable attendance and provide accurate written and verbal communication.
  • Maintain the ability to lawfully operate designated motor vehicles and travel throughout the jurisdiction.
  • Adapt to a wide range of daily conditions requiring strong mental and physical endurance.
  • Perform general labor, assist residents at the Municipal Yard, and complete additional tasks as needed.
