About The Position

The City of Greenville's Fleet Services Department is looking for a Sanitation Crew Leader I. The purpose of this position is to serve on a sanitation crew and to provide safe and efficient operation of assigned heavy equipment used in the collection of solid waste.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience operating various light to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
• The ability to read and write sufficiently to complete required tasks and at least five years of experience operating various light to heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
• Knowledge of state and local laws pertaining to the operation of equipment on highways
• Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operations
• Knowledge of hazards, safety rules, and precautions involved in the operation of sanitation vehicles and equipment
• Knowledge of operations of heavy equipment used in solid waste collection
• Knowledge of the geographic layout of the City
• Skilled in safe operation of trucks and equipment assigned to the position
• Skilled in completing minor adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment
• Skilled in managing one's own time and the time of others efficiently
• Ability to perform strenuous work requiring good physical condition
• Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to direct the work of assigned crew members
• Ability to prepare simple records
• Ability to communicate courteously with the public on sensitive sanitation matters
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and other employees
• Ability to operate assigned navigation equipment and read and follow road maps
• Ability to clean equipment using appropriate materials such as a high-pressure hose when needed
• Ability to work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public
• Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
• Ability to meet the mental and physical demands of the job
• Valid N.C. Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and acceptable driving record at time of hire

Responsibilities

• Operates a mechanical side-loading packer truck to collect solid waste on a designated route, including streets and alleys
• Operates a rear-loading packer truck to collect uncontained refuse in a designated area
• Operates other assigned equipment as needed
• Detects, identifies, and reports improper equipment performance and makes necessary operational adjustments
• Leads and assists collection crews
• Cleans equipment after task completion
• Assists the supervisor in regard to heavy equipment operations
• Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor
