About The Position

This position will assist with the Klondike River sonar program enumerating Chinook salmon on the Klondike River. Daily work tasks will include checking Klondike River water levels, physically adjusting the fish counting sonar and station, sonar data compilations and reviews, possible carcass pitch at the end of the spawning season, and other duties as required. The incumbent will also assist the TH Fish and Wildlife Branch with the Klondike River Stock Restoration Project. This project will take place at various locations on the Klondike and North Klondike Rivers. This aspect of the project focuses on the respectful collection of adult broodstock Chinook salmon (spawners) so that TH can continue with its “stock restoration” project. This work is performed in and near the river and applicants must be knowledgeable in working around fast flowing waters. This position will be primarily in a camp setting in and around Dawson City. Helicopter flights, aerial surveys, and river patrols may also be required. An Eligibility List may be established from this competition – the duration of the eligibility list may be up to 12 months. The eligibility list may be used to fill future permanent full-time, permanent part-time, temporary full-time, temporary part-time, term, or auxiliary on-call vacancies within the same department and classification based on the organizational needs by going the next highest ranked candidate until the eligibility list expires.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge and skills in personal safety, wilderness and remote First Aid.
  • Water safety (i.e. swift water rescue, National Lifesaver, etc.) or willingness to obtain.
  • Excellent monitoring and reporting skills.
  • Knowledge of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Traditional Territory and Settlement Lands, and the TH Final Agreement.
  • Knowledge of fish and wildlife issues affecting Yukon First Nations People.
  • Ability to work in off-grid camp settings and in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to use a computer and spreadsheets, to learn associated software.
  • Criminal Record Check.
  • Remote First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
  • TH101 Cultural Awareness training.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and/or knowledge of fisheries field work or Fish and Wildlife management, with a particular emphasis on fisheries
