Sales Engineer (NYC)

About The Position

Soda is seeking a Sales Engineer for their Brooklyn HQ, to work in-person with the CEO, CMO, and the rest of the GTM team. This role will focus on enterprise deals with technical buyers, offering an opportunity to learn the full sales cycle from experienced professionals and grow rapidly within a fast-paced startup environment. The ideal candidate has a few years of experience, has managed demos, supported Proofs of Concept (PoCs), and worked with Account Executives (AEs) on real deals. In this role, you will work directly with AEs and the CRO on enterprise accounts, running demos, scoping PoCs, and managing the technical aspects of deals, with support and opportunities for growth. Key responsibilities include running demos and scoping PoCs alongside AEs from the initial technical call to closing. You will translate customer problems into Soda solutions and Soda's capabilities into customer-friendly language. This involves building custom demos, sample pipelines, and PoC environments to demonstrate value. The role also requires owning product, technical, and security responses for RFPs and RFIs, and supporting customers through evaluation, purchasing, and implementation. You will act as the technical expert for Data Engineers, Heads of Data Platform, and Chief Data Officers, and will provide feedback from the field to the product and engineering teams. Occasional travel for customer sites, team offsites, and conferences is expected. As it's a startup, you will be expected to contribute across various stages of the sales cycle.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years as a Sales Engineer, Solutions Engineer, or similar customer-facing technical role at a B2B SaaS company
  • Undergraduate degree (or higher) in a technical field - Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or similar
  • Fluent in Python - you can read, write, and debug it in front of a customer
  • Experience running demos and supporting PoCs in customer environments
  • Strong customer communication - clear, calm, and honest under pressure. You can explain something technically complex to a Data Engineer and to a VP of Data in the same conversation
  • Builder mentality, process-oriented - you want to optimize and streamline boring processes. You write docs without being asked. You notice when a process is broken and propose a fix. You'd rather build an AI workflow to automate a repetitive task than do it manually three more times - and you have examples of doing exactly that
  • High horsepower and ruthless prioritization - you context-switch well, manage multiple projects with expansive ownership, and don't drop balls
  • Have a humble attitude, an eagerness to help others, and a desire to pick up whatever knowledge you're missing to make both your team and our customers succeed
  • Based in NYC or willing to relocate

Nice To Haves

  • Top university degree
  • Experience selling to data teams (Data Engineers, Data Platform, CDOs)

  • Experience at a high-growth Series A-C startup
  • Experience building or presenting custom demos

Responsibilities

  • Build custom demos, sample pipelines, and PoC environments that show real value
  • Own product, technical, and security responses on RFPs and RFIs
  • Support customers through evaluation, purchasing, and implementation
  • Be the technical voice in the room - with Data Engineers, Heads of Data Platform, and Chief Data Officers
  • Feed product and engineering the signal from the field - what's winning, what's losing, and why
  • Travel occasionally to customer sites, team offsites, and conferences
  • Wear many hats - it's a startup, you'll touch every stage of the sales cycle
