Sales Manager - Energy Commodities Analytics

Vortexa•Houston, TX

About The Position

Vortexa is seeking a Sales Director to take ownership of a defined territory in the Americas, focusing on originating and closing new business. This is a pure hunter role where the primary focus is acquiring new logos. After a new customer signs, the Sales Director will have a short window to facilitate early expansion before handing the account over to the Account Management team. A key aspect of this role is selling Vortexa’s API and MCP-based solutions into technical and front-office buying centers. While the SaaS platform is foundational, API-led adoption is a significant growth area in the Americas, and the ideal candidate will lead with this offering.

Requirements

  • B2B sales experience with consistent at-or-above-quota attainment.
  • Proven track record of closing new logo business with companies in or trading shipping, freight, crude oil, or refined products markets.
  • Understanding of how businesses in these markets operate and how market intelligence impacts their P&L.
  • Demonstrable success selling complex, high-consideration products to sophisticated front-office buyers (e.g., traders, analysts, portfolio managers, chartering managers, risk professionals).
  • Direct experience selling API, data, or developer-facing products.
  • Comfort in discovery conversations involving both Heads of Trading and Heads of Data Engineering.
  • Hands-on fluency with AI tools in sales workflow, with the ability to demonstrate their use and understand where human judgment is still critical.
  • Working understanding of customer adoption of AI and agentic workflows, and the ability to articulate the value of Vortexa data via API and MCP.
  • Strong commercial instincts in qualification (e.g., MEDDPICC) and negotiation.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, capable of engaging with senior executives and technical end-users.

Nice To Haves

  • Established network of decision-makers at crude, products, and shipping companies across the Americas.
  • Familiarity with MCP, API monetization models, or modern data infrastructure sales motions.
  • Hands-on market background (e.g., analyst, broker, trader) in vessel tracking, commodity fundamentals, or freight.

Responsibilities

  • Originate, qualify, and close new logo opportunities across financial, energy, and shipping segments within the assigned territory.
  • Build and maintain a multi-quarter pipeline.
  • Develop and execute disciplined account plans on named targets, including mapping personas, identifying entry points, and orchestrating multi-threaded campaigns with BDR, Marketing, and Applied Intelligence partners.
  • Prospect based on market signals and trigger events (e.g., new desks, leadership hires, market dislocations) to initiate timely, insight-led outreach.
  • Identify and develop opportunities where Vortexa's API and MCP server solutions serve as the entry point, particularly targeting data, quant, and engineering buying centers.
  • Navigate complex buying groups, including procurement, information security, and data-governance reviews, and address questions regarding data licensing and use in AI models.
  • Sell SaaS and API offerings as complementary solutions.
  • Facilitate early expansion (additional users, use cases, or API integrations) within a defined post-signature window.
  • Ensure a complete handover of accounts to Account Management, including stakeholders, use cases, commercial terms, and growth paths.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date pipeline data in Salesforce.
  • Provide weekly pipeline forecasts with accuracy and conviction.
  • Collaborate with Revenue Operations on territory planning, deal structuring, and pricing strategy.
  • Partner daily with an aligned BDR on outbound sequencing, target account research, and meeting generation, providing coaching and direction.
  • Collaborate with the AMER Marketing team on ABM plays, event-driven pipeline generation, and tailored content.
  • Partner with the AI team on technical discovery, API/MCP demos, and POC scoping.
  • Use AI tools daily for account and persona research, call preparation, follow-up, and drafting tailored outreach.
