About The Position

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Safety, the Safety Specialist – Facilities ensures the safety of the Yaamava’ Resort & Casino property, including team members, guests, and the public. They work to prevent accidents, promote fire protection, and support health preservation across all operations. The role provides tactical safety guidance to every department and influences compliance without direct authority. It ensures adherence to Tribal, Federal, State, and Local safety regulations for team members, vendors, and contractors. Partners with leadership to develop, implement, and communicate effective safety policies and programs throughout the property. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Performs incident response to accidents, injuries, and near miss investigations. Assembles and analyzes compliance, safety performance statistics (leading and lagging), accident trend data, and develop and implement initiatives to drive improvement. 2. Conducts job walks to inspect electrical installations, equipment installations, portable heater use, pool area including pool equipment, and chemicals. Coordinates and facilitates fire and emergency drills; oversees inspections of eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, and other required EHS checks; and maintains departmental chemical inventories. 3. Executes enforcement, conducts audits, and defines opportunities for improvement to ensure exemplary regulatory performance to comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), regulatory agencies, and enterprise guidelines. 4. Designs, develops, and facilitates regulatory training programs scheduled for operating team members. Conducts on-the-job training for safety awareness and compliance including new employee safety orientation, hazardous communications, defensive driving, emergency action and evacuation plans, fire extinguisher use, and other applicable programs. 5. Develops and implements effective safety and health risk and hazard management methods, designs, procedures, and programs. Researches and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency based on findings. 6. Supports project plans related to processes and equipment changes and improvements as well as building additions and modifications to ensure regulatory compliance. 7. Manages environmental, health and safety (EHS) projects that help produce continuous measurable improvements. Uses inspections checklists, apps, and centralized platforms for tracking inspection results, safety performance data and corrective actions plans property wide. 8. Works with responsible department(s) in resolving Hazardous Condition Reports, as well as all other health and safety hazards, which pose an immediate threat to team members, patrons, equipment, or buildings. Responds to health and safety questions, concerns, and inquiries. Creates and distributes safety bulletins, charts, and displays in relation to accident prevention, emergency reporting, first-aid, injuries, etc. 9. Leads a process for sharing of learnings and best practices throughout the property. Moderates quarterly safety committee meetings (to include all enterprises and departments). Investigates and assist departments, when appropriate, with implementation of safety committee recommendations. 10. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of direct related experience in the fields of environmental, health and safety.
  • Must possess intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and internet research methodology.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with safety program management and OSHA regulatory requirements for general industry
  • Knowledge of safe work behaviors, interpretation of safety data and ability to evaluate risk.
  • Ability to clearly present information through written reports and presentations.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills while having the ability to work on multiple projects in an effective and time sensitive manner.
  • Ability to employ perfect discretion in sensitive situations, demonstrating maturity and poise
  • Ability to handle team member complaints effectively with appropriate resolution.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • Ability to influence and work with non-direct reports, peers, and management to gain alignment and achieve goals in a fast past paced work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30 hr. certificate required or must have the ability to obtain certificate within one year.
  • Must obtain and maintain current ServSafe certificate.
  • Authorized Driver: Role requires operation or driving of Tribe-owned vehicles or driving patron vehicles. A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the insurance carrier is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Risk Management, or closely related field is preferred.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional® (CSP), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Safe Quality Food (SQF), or equivalent professional designation preferred and/or must have the ability to obtain relevant professional designation within one year.
