About The Position

Under general supervision, monitors activities of employees to ensure compliance with City, state and federal health and safety policies, procedures and regulations. Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Processes claims against the City; meet with claimants; photo documents scenes; completes documentation and forwards to the Risk Manager for action. Responds to accidents/incidents; photo documents scenes; gathers information for reports. Schedules drug and alcohol testing for employees; forwards results to the Risk Manager. Processes worker’s compensation claims; meets with employees regarding injuries; ensures all proper documentation is completed; attends Benefit Review conferences. Conducts site inspections or City facility inspections to ensure safety and health codes and policies are followed; works with department heads to achieve compliance. Performs visits to various City departments or job sites; meets with managers and supervisors to discuss previous incidents and/or safety issues. Meets with contractors regarding proposed or existing job sites. Meets with employees regarding safety issues. Attends various training sessions. Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; AND five years’ experience in employee health and safety operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license.

  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
