About The Position

This position promotes a work culture focused on safety. The Safety Officer II monitors and logs Department personnel’s compliance with safety training and certification requirements, as well as their participation in safety training sessions held twice a month. The role requires staying current with federal and state safety regulations, researching safety-related topics, and sharing this information with Department personnel for training purposes. Additionally, the Safety Officer II trains Department personnel on various safety topics such as CPR, confined space, forklift, and high-lift forklift training. This role involves inspecting Department facilities to identify potential safety issues for repair and verifying that repairs have addressed the identified issues. Travel to Department worksites is required for inspections. The Safety Officer II investigates workplace injuries, identifies root causes, and responds to requests from Cal/OSHA regarding these injuries. The position also performs ergonomic assessments of workspaces and equipment and verifies that Department first aid kits are stocked and current.

Requirements

  • OPTION A: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field -AND- Three (3) years of professional level experience in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related program at the level of Safety Assistant.
  • OPTION B: Five (5) years’ experience at a professional level in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or closely related program responsibilities in a large department at the level of Safety Assistant.
  • OPTION C: One (1) years' experience as head of a comprehensive occupational safety and accident prevention program in a department.
  • A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene or closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • Incumbent must stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
