About The Position

The Safety Manager will contribute to the development of the organization’s strategic plans and objectives, driving division H&S strategy by creating an H&S plan to meet organization’s objectives. This role acts as a strategic business partner, change agent, and member of the line management staff, overseeing company and division-wide H&S programs and initiatives. The Safety Manager will develop, implement, and maintain all written H&S programs and policies in accordance with OSHA, Cal-OSHA, USEPA and/or corporate standards and in compliance with applicable laws. Responsibilities include monitoring the effectiveness of all H&S policies, practices, and processes, recommending improvements, and facilitating organization and leadership development efforts to address root causes of H&S related issues. The role involves coaching Managers and employees at all levels, influencing senior management, and providing leadership in the development and implementation of HS strategic plans. The Safety Manager will also participate in setting corporate policy, setting priorities and direction for H&S initiatives, developing and implementing H&S training, and providing technical H&S support. This includes participating in process reviews, supporting engineering controls, managing PPE requirements, promoting safety awareness, leading H&S committees, and developing/managing required reports. A strong understanding of Federal and State (California) occupational safety and health regulations, including monitoring regulatory changes and advising on compliance, is essential. The role also involves auditing practices and records, managing near-miss incidents and injuries, and working with injured workers and TPAs to manage Worker's Compensation Claims, as well as reviewing incident investigation reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required (Masters preferred) in safety science, industrial engineering, or industrial hygiene, or Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 8+ years of progressively complex H&S experience required preferably in an industrial environment.
  • 5+ years of experience in management level role.
  • Understands general business metrics and how each metric influences each department and its employees.
  • Experience fostering employee communication and team work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of H&S policies and practices, compensation and benefits, organization change and effectiveness
  • Strong leadership skills and experience influencing at senior levels in an organization.
  • Ability to work as and be viewed as a trusted business partner to the organization.
  • Clear and concise interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to work at both strategic and tactical levels, within managerial/leadership and non-managerial employee groups.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Skill in auditing/inspecting operations and company procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee company, division-wide H&S programs and initiatives.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain all written H&S programs and policies in accordance with OSHA, Cal-OSHA, USEPA and/or corporate standards and in compliance with applicable laws.
  • Monitor effectiveness of all H&S policies, practices, and processes to determine efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Recommend improvements to achieve and deliver improved results.
  • Facilitate organization and leadership development efforts to address root causes of H&S related issues.
  • Coach Managers and employees at all levels within client groups on a variety of health and safety topics.
  • Influence senior management across the company to clarify and to resolve divisional H&S issues and improve overall H&S program effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of HS strategic plans to support the company’s objectives.
  • Participate with other senior division / client group management staff to establish corporate policy.
  • Work with our senior H&S staff to set priorities and direction of H&S initiatives that link to business objectives.
  • Develop, implement, coordinate and perform H&S training.
  • Provide technical H&S support and information to required personnel.
  • Participate in process reviews (such job hazard analyses, etc.).
  • Support corporate/plant engineering to implement engineering controls to minimize safety and occupational health hazards.
  • Manage and maintain PPE (personal protective equipment) requirements.
  • Promote safety and health awareness through internal company memoranda, newsletters, and/or specific training programs.
  • Lead and serve on various H&S related committees.
  • Develop, implement, and manage OSHA, CAL OSHA required reports (OSHA logs etc).
  • Understand Federal and State (California) occupational safety, and health regulations and monitor regulatory changes as they occur.
  • Advise manufacturing plants and corporate staff of regulatory changes to ensure compliance in a timely manner.
  • Periodically audit practices and records of facilities to ensure compliance with company programs and Federal/State occupational safety and health regulations.
  • Manage near-miss incidents, lost-time injuries or illnesses, and work with injured workers, TPA, and clinic to manage Worker's Compensation Claims.
  • Review injury/illness and non-injury incident investigation reports and follow-up as necessary.
