About The Position

The Safety & Health Manager position at Pilgrim's is responsible for providing guidance, direction, and leadership to the site’s safety process. This role ensures that the safety of team members is the top priority, adhering to the principle that 'Safety Is A Condition'. The manager will implement and maintain corporate Safety and Health programs, manage site-specific documentation, and communicate effectively with the Corporate Safety Manager. A key aspect of the role involves investigating incidents, tracking trends, and developing proactive action plans. The position requires daily interaction with Occupational Health Nurses to foster a collaborative team environment within the safety and medical departments. Visibility within the processing plant and other site locations is essential for conducting audits and ensuring compliance. The manager will also be responsible for providing monthly safety performance data to the Corporate Safety Office, actively participating in the Workers’ Compensation program, and supporting training initiatives. Additionally, this role involves managing the security force to protect employees, visitors, contractors, and company assets, and serving as the primary liaison with external regulatory agencies and insurance providers. Budget management for the safety department, including cost-saving initiatives, and ensuring new construction meets specific safety standards are also critical functions. The role requires close collaboration with the local medical community to ensure alignment on OSHA recordkeeping and return-to-work programs.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of safety experience in the food industry preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Extensive knowledge in the areas of Workers Compensation, OSHA, DOT, etc. is essential.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Must be available 24/7 as needed.

  • Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) capabilities would be a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain all corporate Safety and Health programs.
  • Develop and maintain site’s Share Point.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with the Corporate Safety Manager.
  • Assist in the investigation of all near misses, first aid cases, recordable cases, and lost day injuries.
  • Assist the Fleet Safety Regional Manager in the investigation of vehicular accidents.
  • Track injury trends and develop action plans to address identified accident trends.
  • Keep the management team informed of any safety and health related issues and/or concerns.
  • Interact daily with the Occupational Health Nurse(s) to build a team atmosphere.
  • Be visible in the processing plant and other site locations.
  • Conduct periodic safety and health audits and track findings to ensure closure.
  • Provide the Corporate Safety Office with the site’s monthly safety performance numbers by the deadline dates.
  • Be actively involved in the site’s Workers’ Compensation program.
  • Provide training support to the organization and ensure all required monthly training is completed.
  • Manage security force to protect site employees, visitors, contractors, and property and assets.
  • Be the site’s liaison when outside agencies conduct annual assessments.
  • Generate, manage, and monitor the safety departmental budget.
  • Be the site’s liaison with the Property Insurance Company to provide closure to open recommendations.
  • Work with the company’s Engineering Construction Department to ensure all new construction meets FM Global specifications.
  • Be intimately involved with the local medical community to ensure understanding of the company’s philosophy on OSHA recordkeeping and return to work programs.
