About The Position

The Safety Engineer will support the space program located in Houston, TX. This role involves ensuring compliance with various safety and environmental regulations, mentoring management and employees on safety programs, developing and reviewing technical documents for safety compliance, conducting audits, and providing guidance on safe work practices. The engineer will identify and mitigate hazards, analyze system designs, and create hazard analysis products. Training, incident investigations, and reporting are also key responsibilities. Additionally, the role includes program management for safety initiatives, ergonomic assessments, and coordination of hazardous materials management and exposure sampling.

Requirements

  • This position requires US Citizenship due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • Must have a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering.
  • Must have 5+ years of recent and direct safety engineering work experience.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and TEAMS.
  • Must be team players with strong work ethics and must be culture oriented.
  • Able to communicate effectively, verbally and in written form, with internal and external customers.
  • Able to follow company programs, processes, procedures, practices, requirements, goals, and objectives.
  • Must be organized with good time management skills and must be able to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
  • Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience with Incident & Injury Free and Behavior-Based Safety techniques desired.
  • Experience in medical/scientific locations is preferred.
  • MS degree in area of specialty is preferred.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), Johnson Space Center (JSC), and State and local requirements.
  • Act as a mentor to management and employees for the implementation of the JETS Safety Program.
  • Assist in procedure development and review technical documents to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
  • Conduct audits and walk-throughs to ensure organizational compliance with safety program.
  • Provide guidance to operations to ensure safe and environmentally responsible work practices are implemented.
  • Identify and communicate hazards, causes and effects as they apply to fabrication/machining areas and research laboratories.
  • Develop hazard controls and verifications to mitigate identified hazards.
  • Independently analyze and make recommendations for system design, equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
  • Create hazard analysis products for facility systems used in support of fabrication/machining areas and research laboratories using safety analysis techniques to include System Hazard Analysis and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis.
  • Assistance in the creation of Job Hazard Analysis for tasks performed in fabrication/machining areas, laboratories, and research laboratories.
  • Conduct safety and environmental health related training and design new training classes as needed.
  • Participate in User Readiness Reviews as a subject matter expert.
  • Research, recommend procurement and train employees in the use of personal protective equipment required to mitigate identified workplace hazards.
  • Perform incident investigations to identify root cause and corrective actions.
  • Provide periodic safety reports and briefings to management.
  • Provide program management responsibilities for all safety related programs and initiatives.
  • Perform ergonomic assessments for field and office work environments.
  • Coordinate requirements for compliance with hazardous materials management requirements.
  • Coordinate requests for sampling of workplace exposures for physical and chemical hazards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
