About The Position

As the Safety Engineer you will have the opportunity to assist the Director of EHS in all areas of safety including compliance with TKG’s Energetic Operating Standards (EOS), Occupational Safety and Health Standards 29 CFR 1910, Process Safety Management and Plant Process Control Board. Help coordinate the site’s Industrial Hygiene Program, develop training agendas and provides support for Safety training to the Anoka Operation. Assist with regulatory compliance requirements as directed. This position is responsible for the coordination of outside agency’s inspections including follow-up to findings and acts as a resource to the Anoka Operation’s Safety efforts. Reviews and analyzes new proposals that require comments from Safety Department. This position reports to the Director of Environmental, Health and Safety and is based out of our Anoka Location.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in science, Safety, or Industrial Hygiene required. (Years of experience and training may be considered in lieu of education).
  • Experience and knowledge of regulations and interpretations associated with OSHA, DOT, NFPA, DHS, ATF, and ANSI.
  • Ability to communicate well with all types of employees.
  • Employee will be sitting the majority of the time, with some walking and standing.
  • Minor lifting objects over 10 lbs., carrying, stooping, and kneeling to access books and reports, transport paperwork and materials, and to retrieve files.
  • Some local travel and work outdoors.
  • Manual dexterity for extensive computer work and writing.
  • Hearing, speaking, and vision are required (with or without correction).
  • Must communicate effectively in verbal and written formats.
  • Reading comprehension and basic math skills are a requirement.
  • Flexibility to effectively deal with a variety of people and situations and to handle interruptions and multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Quick thinking and problem solving to readily assimilate information.
  • Ability to maintain tact and highly professional manners.
  • Initiative to effectively complete tasks with little supervision.
  • The ability to identify and appropriately handle confidential information.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of and experience in ammunition and explosives manufacturing and industrial hygiene strongly preferred but not required.
  • 2-5 years’ experience with and working knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • ASP, CSP, or CIH preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all activities of EOS Compliance which includes Plant Process Control Board and the EOS committee. Included in this section are the 14 compliance steps of Process Safety Management and all related correspondence, documentation, coordinating PHA meetings, and other activities related to EOS.
  • Supervise outside agency’s compliance inspections within the Federal Operations and issues inspection reports with abatement.
  • Provides training for Plant Authority responsibilities, Contractor Safety and Management, Lift Truck Operator training, New Hire Orientation and supports Safety training for the Federal Operation.
  • Responds to emergencies at the Federal locations to act as incident command or to assist in the emergency operations as necessary.
  • Performs Industrial Hygiene work including air sampling and other possible sources that could be injurious to workers.
  • Ensures that Industrial Hygiene work complies with appropriate government regulations and laws.
  • Reports results of sampling and testing to the appropriate Department Supervisors.
  • Issues personal protective equipment and performs related training as needed.
  • Calibrates and maintains all Industrial Hygiene and monitoring systems/equipment for Safety Department and Federal Operations.
  • Provides guidance to Federal Operation’s Supervisors.
  • Conducts safety inspection and assigns and monitors abatement deadlines.
  • Reviews new or revised OSHA and DOT regulations.
  • Submits policy drafts or revisions to the Safety Manager for direction.
  • Develops outlines and teaching materials, and serves as training instructor as needed.
  • Performs accident investigations.
  • Works with the Health Supervisor in assuring compliance with Vista Outdoors policies and government regulations.
  • Reviews changes in Standard Operating Procedures, Engineering Orders, Drawings, Safety Proposals, and all Equipment Changes.
  • Prepares, approves, and implements comprehensive health and safety procedures in accordance with federal and Governmental regulations with particular emphasis on explosive safety, industrial hygiene, and process safety.
  • Perform audits, training and/or investigations at other company facilities/locations as required.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
