About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Safety Director to lead and continuously improve our company-wide safety program. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for developing safety strategy, strengthening our culture of safety, ensuring regulatory compliance, and reducing workplace injuries and losses across our construction operations. The Safety Director will report to the President, lead a team of Safety Officers, and work closely with field leadership, project teams, and company management to ensure employees have the training, tools, and support needed to work safely every day. The ideal candidate combines strong construction safety expertise with the ability to lead people, analyze trends, develop practical solutions, and build strong working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of construction safety experience, with demonstrated knowledge of construction methods, materials, hazards, and safe work practices.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification.
  • OSHA 500 certification.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local occupational safety regulations and OSHA standards.
  • Experience conducting jobsite safety inspections, identifying hazards, and developing practical corrective actions.
  • Experience investigating workplace incidents and developing accident-prevention and loss-control strategies.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to effectively work with employees at all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to develop and deliver engaging safety training, educational programs, and workshops.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to gather information, identify trends, and prepare meaningful reports.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to establish priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Strong written communication and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license and ability to travel regionally to project sites.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evening and/or weekend hours and complete overnight travel when business needs require.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Construction Technology, Construction Management, Occupational Safety, Operations Management, or a related field.
  • Previous experience leading or supervising safety professionals.
  • Experience using safety metrics and performance data to improve EMR, loss ratios, and overall safety performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead our safety program. Direct the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of company safety policies, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Manage and develop the safety team. Provide leadership, direction, and support to the safety officers while promoting consistency and accountability across project sites.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance. Ensure compliance with OSHA and applicable federal, New York State, and local safety regulations and requirements.
  • Be present in the field. Regularly visit project sites to inspect workplace conditions, equipment, and work practices; identify potential hazards; and partner with field teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Drive continuous improvement. Evaluate safety trends, EMR, loss ratios, incidents, and other performance indicators and recommend strategies to reduce injuries and losses.
  • Investigate incidents. Analyze accidents, injuries, near misses, and other incidents to determine root causes and implement appropriate corrective and preventive measures.
  • Support workers’ compensation management. Monitor claims and collaborate with appropriate parties to help reduce lost work time and support successful return-to-work efforts.
  • Prepare and Deliver effective safety training. Develop, present, and coordinate ongoing employee safety training and new-hire safety orientation.
  • Coordinate required certifications and testing. Arrange CPR/first aid training, respirator medical evaluations, fit testing, and other required programs while maintaining accurate training records.
  • Maintain OSHA records and reporting. Ensure required OSHA forms, logs, postings, and incident documentation are completed accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Stay current. Maintain professional knowledge through OSHA resources, seminars, industry organizations, professional affiliations, and continuing education.
  • Manage safety documentation. Maintain safety records, inspection documentation, monthly safety calendars, checklists, meeting materials, and other required reports.
