About The Position

The Safety Coordinator supports the Director of Safety and Security by coordinating and assisting with all aspects of safety across zoo operations. This role focuses on both visitor safety and employee safety, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, supporting emergency preparedness, and responding effectively to incidents and safety codes. The Safety Coordinator works collaboratively with internal teams, external agencies, and public safety partners to maintain a safe, welcoming environment for guests, staff, volunteers, and animals.

  • Associates Degree preferred and or equivalent experience in safety and security management.
  • Experience working in large venues, cultural institutions, amusement or hospitality environment.
  • Experience and training in emergency response, fire/life safety systems, regulatory standards and inspections conducted by governmental agencies or 3rd party vendors.
  • NOTE: A comparable combination of education, experience, or training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills, and ability required may qualify an individual.
  • Standing for long periods of time, walking for long periods of time, sitting for long periods of time, ability to work alone for long periods of time, ability to work in a small confined space, ability to work with mild cleaning supplies.
  • Indoor conditions including noise, odors, dust and mechanical/electrical hazards; Outdoor conditions including hot and cold temperatures, precipitation.
  • Certified in CPR/First Aid/AED and or ability to complete the certification.

Responsibilities

  • Possess strong communication skills and be able to extend those to guests, staff, volunteers and vendors.
  • Provide solutions and facilitate implementation relating to requests, comments and suggestions.
  • Working closely with Zoo staff and Public Safety and First Aid contractual staff and be knowledgeable of best practices and policies.
  • Role player in Emergency response and must have the ability to remain calm and communicate effectively.
  • Respond in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Available for designated 24/7 rotation of emergency notifications and action items.
  • Support on grounds activities to include afterhours special events and high attendance & elevated risk situations.
  • Operate and maintain fire & building alarms, perimeter & surveillance security systems and other platforms supporting safety operations.
  • Assist with the coordination of routine maintenance, regulatory inspections, operating permits and scheduling repairs as needed. To include elevators and amusement ride standards.
  • Familiarity with OSHA compliance requirements and facilitate follow up actions.
  • Support employee safety programs and attend safety committee meetings and track action items.
  • Maintain the appropriate logs, records and reports.
  • Maintain a clean and organized environment and follow process for service and repairs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
