About The Position

The Rescue Mission is currently seeking a full-time Warehouse Safety Assistant to work out of our Warehouse Distribution Center in Liverpool, NY . This role plays a critical part in ensuring a safe, compliant, and healthy work environment for staff, volunteers, and partners. Under the direction of the Director of Safety & Facilities , the Safety Assistant is responsible for reviewing, implementing, enforcing, and monitoring safety procedures, training programs, and performance metrics. This position collaborates closely with internal departments, contractors, vendors, and business partners with a shared goal of reducing workplace injuries and promoting a strong safety-first culture across the organization.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) related field , or a Bachelor’s degree in an EHS-relevant discipline preferred.
  • Valid New York State Driver’s License in compliance with company policy.
  • Ability to travel locally as needed for inspections, audits, and safety assessments.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow direction from supervisors and senior facilities staff.
  • Comfortable working in an environment that serves a diverse population .

Nice To Haves

  • Prior warehouse and/or retail experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support safety initiatives, including chairing the local Safety Committee and developing and delivering safety training programs.
  • Serve as a liaison between safety operations and the facilities team.
  • Assist the Director of Safety & Facilities with alarm systems, badge access, monitoring, building inspections, and environmental inspections.
  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly safety walkthroughs and inspections; identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Inspect equipment and machinery, identify repair needs, and report damage or maintenance requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of OSHA standards and ensure organizational compliance.
  • Support the development and tracking of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Schedule and manage emergency response drills and coordinate with local authorities.
  • Maintain inspection and compliance records for DOH, HHAP, OTDA, and Onondaga County for Shelter and Crossroads facilities.
  • Maintain historical facility and equipment records, including blueprints, CAD drawings, owner’s manuals, and repair documentation.
  • Manage vehicle files, DMV records, and schedule routine maintenance.
  • Participate in the emergency on-call rotation to support facilities needs outside normal business hours.
  • Promote and model a safety-first culture, ensuring all employees follow established safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain regular and predictable in-person attendance , which is an essential function of the job.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
