About The Position

Lead safety strategy and compliance efforts that protect people, facilities, and mission-critical operations nationwide. The Safety and Occupational Health Specialist supports GSA’s national safety program by providing expert guidance, policy interpretation, and oversight across a nationwide portfolio. This role serves as a subject matter expert in occupational safety, compliance, and risk management while supporting inspections, training, and program development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, or related field; or a degree supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in related scientific or technical disciplines.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant scientific or technical experience in occupational safety and health.
  • Expert knowledge of OSH concepts, principles, laws, regulations, and codes, with the ability to recommend substantive program changes and develop new approaches to complex safety challenges.
  • Technical authority-level knowledge of occupational safety, building construction methods, hazardous materials, industrial processes, and safety systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications to ensure adequate safety and health protections.
  • Extensive knowledge of hazardous work operations across diverse facility types, enabling hazard detection, accident analysis, and compliance evaluation.
  • Ability to make independent judgments, develop new procedures, and recommend control measures for complex or unprecedented safety issues.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to present recommendations, articulate technical information to non-technical audiences, and represent GSA to external stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Professional certification (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHMM) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert guidance on occupational safety, hazard control, and regulatory compliance
  • Serve as SME across safety areas including construction, electrical, fall protection, PPE, and hazard analysis
  • Conduct inspections, investigations, and risk assessments; develop corrective action plans
  • Investigate incidents, identify root causes, and recommend preventive measures
  • Review construction and project plans to ensure safety compliance
  • Develop and deliver safety policies, guidance, and training programs
  • Support national safety program tracking, reporting, and continuous improvement
  • Represent GSA in meetings with agencies, regulators, and stakeholders
  • Maintain safety data, records, and compliance with federal standards
