About The Position

The Whiting School of Engineering's STEM Achievement in Baltimore Elementary Schools (SABES) is seeking a SABES Instructional Coach. This role will support the implementation of the SABES program by providing instructional modeling and coaching to afterschool facilitators. The goal is to increase their confidence and capacity to teach the engineering design process in-person in afterschool settings for 3rd-5th graders. SABES is committed to integrating STEM concepts into the children's existing world. The coach will be responsive to questions, proactive with guidance, communicate regularly with students, and mentor them as they work. Instructional Facilitators will implement provided lesson plans during in-person sessions, aiming to engage students through active participation rather than lectures. Participants in the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) programs come from diverse backgrounds with a range of experiences and abilities. Instructional Facilitators must be prepared to accommodate various learning styles, foster a sense of community, and engage, encourage, and excite the students.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree.
At least 3 years of directly related, successful secondary teaching experience teaching in transformation/turnaround or persistently low-performing context.
Works well under pressure.
Skilled at proactive problem-solving.
Strong communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Strong attention to detail and follow through.
Build and maintain relationships with various stakeholders.
Ability to quickly learn new software, as needed.
Proficient with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Proficient with team collaboration platforms (One Drive, MS Teams, One Note, Google Docs, Sheets, and Forms).
Proficient with online education technologies, such as Blackboard, Google Classroom, or other Learning Management System (LMS).
The ability to work independently following established formats.

Nice To Haves

Master's Degree and teacher certification.
Curriculum development experience.
Prior experience working in urban schools is highly desirable.
Prior experience working in a leadership capacity among teachers and other site-based staff is desirable.
Prior experience teaching the engineering design process to elementary students.
Demonstrated ability to lead workshops.

Responsibilities

Develop a sense of classroom community for a class of approximately 20 students participating in the CEO Program at one or multiple school sites.
Set norms and expectations.
Conduct team building/social and emotional learning discussions.
Connect and check-in with students and families if students stop attending the program.
Participate in instructor training prior to the start of the program (October) and several times throughout the year.
Complete each engineering activity or lesson plan using the student materials prior to the students engaging with them.
Review supplemental materials to prepare for implementation.
Introduce modules to students at designated in-person sessions (approximately twice a week, Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays) using provided lesson plans.
Assist students by providing appropriate accommodations and extensions on an individual basis.
Assess Student Work and Proficiencies.
Review student work and respond to signs of significant student struggle, as necessary.
Provide feedback for completed projects.
Document and effectively communicate with the CEO team and school-based facilitators about student progress and issues.
Provide feedback to CEO team for improvement to program.
Perform other related duties as requested.
Observe, coach, and provide feedback to the afterschool facilitators, including reviewing lesson plans and providing in-person coaching at BCPSS schools once per week, to support STEM afterschool content and pedagogy.
Support and monitor coordination and communication between the afterschool facilitators and school-based staff.
Regularly report on progress and implementation issues to the CEO leadership team.
Assist in the timely inventory, request, and delivery of supplies to sites.
Contribute information and support student assessment for inclusion in the annual evaluation process.
