Run Test Technician

Munters•Daleville, VA
•$26 - $33

About The Position

Perform duties to test the electrical operation of HVAC units after structural, mechanical, electrical, and condensing components have been installed. Ensure units comply with product specifications while working within standard procedures and making decisions about test setup, operations, and sequencing. The role includes pretest inspections, dry testing, operational run testing, troubleshooting, adjustment, documentation, and communication with production and engineering teams. The technician uses job folders, production schedules, bills of materials, drawings, specifications, work instructions, and inspection checklists to verify each unit and its components. Testing includes electrical safety and function checks, mechanical and airflow testing, refrigeration and gas-system checks, control-system validation, and leak inspections. The technician records test results and defects, completes quality documents, and confirms completed units are ready for punch-off. The position requires adherence to safety rules and the Energy Control Program, including Lock-Out Tag-Out and energize/de-energize procedures. Work involves daily exposure to high voltage up to 575 volts and amperage up to 200+ amps, use of personal protective equipment, and frequent physical activity. Standard work schedules plus overtime and weekend hours are required to meet production demands.

  • Ability to read circuit diagrams, schematics, ladder logic diagrams, and layout drawings.
  • Ability to troubleshoot circuits and devices and recommend changes or improvements.
  • Complete knowledge of refrigeration operation systems, including charging and weighing refrigerant charges.
  • Understanding of electrical theory and practice as applied to electric motors, motor starters, contactors, control relays, time-delay relays, circuit breakers, fusing, PLCs, fluid-flow and temperature sensors, and related electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical components.
  • Adherence to the Energy Control Program and applicable safety requirements.
  • Ability to meet frequent physical demands including standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing, maneuvering, stooping, squatting, lifting, grasping, and reaching.
  • Visual and aural acuity and listening ability.
  • Use the specified minimum personal protective equipment: ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses; ANSI Cut 3 4544 gloves; ASTM F1117 electrical-hazard foot protection; fire-rated long-sleeve shirts and pants; and two layers of gloves throughout the year.
  • Complete Munters Orientation and Quality Assurance and Safety Awareness training.

Responsibilities

  • Review job folders, production schedules, bills of materials, operating requirements, standards, work instructions, inspection checklists, schedules, and nonconforming issues.
  • Verify job numbers, drawing revision levels, schematics, specifications, and components against the bill of materials, and confirm energized components are installed correctly.
  • Visually inspect units and electrical control panels for assembly and cosmetic compliance, and perform terminal pull tests.
  • Perform ground checks, phase high-voltage wires, verify motor and compressor resistance, and conduct Hi Pot tests.
  • Energize units at specified voltages and test components, wiring, airflow, sensors, safety devices, and electrical devices; calibrate to specifications.
  • Manipulate controller programs to validate proper inputs and outputs.
  • Follow Lock-Out Tag-Out and energize/de-energize procedures when energizing units at specified voltage and amperage.
  • Test blower, fan, and wheel operation and direction; balance fans and blowers to engineering specifications and document results.
  • Operate crankcase heaters and measure amperage draws.
  • Inspect and record pressure drops and fan RPMs according to engineering specifications.
  • Adjust burner-system gas valves; connect gas or electric supplies and check functionality, temperatures, amperage, and shutoff operation against specifications.
  • Set airflow switches and timers, and measure and record voltage and amperage of energized components.
  • Install and operate software required by system requirements.
  • Measure and record subcooling, superheat, suction and liquid-line temperatures, and pressures to verify refrigerant charge.
  • Run units in automatic mode to simulate required operating conditions, verify component engagement and disengagement, and confirm gauge accuracy.
  • Investigate and report test failures; troubleshoot failed units and make defined adjustments.
  • Test for heat or refrigerant leaks and pinpoint leaks when found.
  • Inspect for water migration, verify chambers are sealed, and ensure liquid solenoid valves are in the correct state before shipment.
  • Document defects on the unit Scorecard, make routine replacement-component installations or notify production when replacement parts are needed, and record adjustments.
  • Complete quality-control run-test documents and notify engineering when unit markups are ready for as-built processing.
  • Notify cell leads when units have completed run testing and are ready for punch-off.
  • Complete in-process inspection and quality-gate checklists.
  • Perform or assist with other operations as needed to maintain workflow and meet schedules and quality requirements.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work areas and consistently follow safety rules and requirements.
  • Participate in meetings and work groups to coordinate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems, and stay informed about developments, requirements, and policies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
