About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Respiratory Therapy, this role involves setting up and operating various types of respiratory care equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory and/or cardiac disease. When qualified and trained, the individual may perform the duties of an RRT in the NICU as applicable. The position requires a high degree of concentration to ensure patient safety, productivity, and a positive image in an acute care environment. The role involves constant walking, lifting, and manipulating of equipment, and the ability to take constructive criticism for growth. The individual may be exposed to communicable diseases and potentially combative patients.

Requirements

  • Texas State license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • National Board Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist required (Effective 07/18/2017).
  • Appropriate CPR Certification.
  • None specified for skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up and operates various types of respiratory care equipment for diagnosis and treatment of respiratory and/or cardiac disease.
  • Performs duties of an RRT in the NICU when qualified and trained.

  • Performs duties of the CRT as required.
  • Explains purpose and procedure of treatments, tests, and equipment to the patient.
  • Responsible for coordination with the charge therapist for emergency coverage.
  • Consults with and advises staff technicians regarding proper equipment use and management of difficult patients.
  • Assists in review of therapeutic and diagnostic lab policies and procedures, recommending new or revised policies.
  • Takes an active role in in-service education of technicians and orientation of nursing personnel to Respiratory Therapy.
  • Conducts physician-prescribed treatments of a routine nature, administering medicinal vapors, gases, humidity, and oxygen.
  • Able to perform all therapies and procedures as outlined in Policy and Procedure manuals.
  • Determines acid-base balance efficiency of ventilation and metabolism of the respiratory system.
  • Performs therapeutic and diagnostic lab duties.
  • Sets up, operates, and monitors ventilators for patients with inadequate spontaneous ventilation.
  • Assists in maintaining an appropriate inventory of therapeutic and diagnostic equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures adequate maintenance of ventilation and assists with chest compressions during CPR.
  • Performs, processes, and reports EKGs in HeartStation.
  • Records all pertinent information of treatments and patient response on respiratory care records within the HIM system.
  • Makes regular rounds, checking patient's oxygen equipment and other respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Helps maintain a clean, neat, and orderly condition in the department and surroundings.
  • Processes and assures all equipment is cleaned and stored properly for timely use.
  • Consistently reports to work at the scheduled time and is ready to work.
  • Does not have excessive call-ins.
  • Attends to personal matters outside of work time to avoid productivity problems or conflicts.
  • Does not excessively use the internet or engage in personal phone calls.
  • Consistently maintains a neat, professional appearance.
  • Aware of and assists with QI program within the department.
  • Has a thorough understanding of Hospital Fire, Safety, and Disaster plans.
  • Assists in maintaining equipment in good repair; tags and notifies director when equipment fails.
  • Willing to consult with other staff and physicians regarding performance and interpretation of tests or procedures.
  • Strives to recognize and evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses; handles personal and professional frustrations appropriately.
  • Consistently performs duties and responsibilities in a timely manner with minimal direct supervision.

  • Attends conferences, in-services, and classes to keep current with trends in Respiratory Therapy.
  • Actively participates in cardiopulmonary meetings and huddles for consistent department communication.
  • Performs arterial blood draw following policies and procedures.
  • Accurately analyzes and results blood gas samples.
  • Assists with recording of intake and output in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Performs vital signs per protocol (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations) in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Connects leads, blood pressure (NIBP), and pulse oximeter in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Able to weigh patients using standing, bed, and/or chair scales in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Applies ice-pack/warm compress as needed in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Transfers/transports/turns patients in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Assists the nurse by holding patients for baths and/or cleaning in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Assists with patient transfers, order entry, etc. as needed in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Helps without being asked to get patients to the room for triage in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Consistently helps take care of patients for quick turnaround and great customer service in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Readily collects and labels blood specimens in the presence of the patient and delivers to the lab in a timely manner in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Assists in taking urine and stool samples to the lab in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Accurately performs glucometer testing and cleans machine after use in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Assures glucometer controls are run when appropriate in a Free Standing Emergency Room.
  • Makes shift assignments and delegates as necessary when in a Charge Roll.
  • Manages low census or sending home early as needed, and calls for additional staffing as necessary when in a Charge Roll.
  • Oversees daily activity of the staff on shift (including EKG techs) when in a Charge Roll.
  • Assists Director with merit evaluations and disciplinary problem documentation when in a Charge Roll.
  • Supports staff and other departments with problems or issues and reports to director when necessary when in a Charge Roll.
  • Rounds monthly with co-workers and reports to director when in a Charge Roll.
  • Oversees maintenance of ABG machines when in a Charge Roll.
  • Assists with planning, coordination, and supervision of technical staff activities during the assigned shift when in a Charge Roll.
