About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Respiratory Therapy, this role involves operating various types of respiratory care equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory and/or cardiac disease. When qualified and trained, the individual may perform the duties of an RRT in the NICU as applicable.

Requirements

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • 5 years in critical care units
  • Texas State license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • National Board Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist required (Effective 07/18/2017).

  • Performs vital signs per protocol- blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations.
  • Connect leads, blood pressure (NIBP) and pulse oximeter. Able to weigh patients standing, bed and/or chair scales.
  • Apply ice-pack/warm compress as needed.
  • Transfer/transport/ turn patients.
  • Assists nurse by holding patients for nurse to give bath and/or clean patient.
  • Assist with patient transfers, order entry, etc. as needed.
  • Helps without being asked to get patients to the room for triage.
  • Consistently helps take care of patients for quick patient turn around and great customer service.
  • Readily collects and labels blood specimens in the presence of the patient and delivers to the lab in a timely manner. Assists in taking urine and stool samples to the lab.
  • Accurately performs glucometer testing and cleans machine after use.
  • Assures glucometer controls are run when appropriate.
  • When in Charge Roll responsibilities include but are not limited to: Making shift assignments, and delegate as necessary.
  • When in Charge Roll responsibilities include but are not limited to: Low-census or sending home early as needed. As well as calling for additional staffing as necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years including ICU and ER experience.
  • ACLS PALS and NRP preferred.
  • Prior to working NICU.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up and operates various types of respiratory care equipment for diagnosis and treatment of respiratory and/or cardiac disease.
  • Performs duties of an RRT in the NICU when qualified and trained.
  • Explains purpose and procedure of treatments, tests and equipment to the patient.
  • Coordinates with the charge therapist for emergency coverage.
  • Consults with and advises staff technicians regarding equipment use and management of difficult patients.
  • Assists in review of therapeutic and diagnostic lab policies and procedures, recommending new or revised policies.
  • Takes an active role in in-service education of technicians and orientation of nursing personnel to Respiratory Therapy.
  • Conducts physician-prescribed treatments of a routine nature, operating various modalities to administer medicinal vapors, gases, humidity, and oxygen.
  • Performs all therapy and procedures as outlined in policy and procedure manuals.
  • Determines the acid-base balance efficiency of ventilation and metabolism of the respiratory system.
  • Performs therapeutic and diagnostic lab duties.
  • Sets up, operates, and monitors ventilators for patients with inadequate spontaneous ventilation.
  • Assists in maintaining an appropriate inventory of therapeutic and diagnostic equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures adequate maintenance of ventilation and assists with chest compressions during cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
  • Performs, processes, and reports EKGs in the data management system.
  • Records all pertinent information of treatments and patient response in the respiratory care records within the HIM system (EHR).
  • Makes regular rounds, checking patient's oxygen equipment and other respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Maintains a clean, neat, and orderly condition in the department and surroundings.
  • Processes and assures all equipment is cleaned and stored properly for timely use.
