The Opportunity: 4 or 8-month placement starting September 2026 How You Will Contribute: Ciena is seeking a highly motivated intern to join our Routing/IP Software Development team. This role involves contributing to the design, development, and testing of software for advanced routing and IP solutions within Ciena's network products.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in C and Python
  • Strong understanding of fundamental networking concepts, including TCP/IP, routing protocols, and network topologies.
  • Familiarity with software development tools (e.g., Git, debuggers).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to IP routing protocols (ISIS, BGP), MPLS, and Segment Routing features (SR-MPLS, SRv6).
  • Knowledge of Ethernet services, IPv4/IPv6, EVPN, TiLFA, or other transport protocols.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with experienced engineers to design, implement, and debug software for routing protocols (e.g., Segment Routing, OSPF, BGP, ISIS, MPLS) and IP functionalities.
  • Participate in code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards and best practices.
  • Support implementation and testing of Segment Routing features, including SR-MPLS and SRv6, with focus on scale, resiliency, and traffic engineering.
  • Develop and execute unit tests and integration tests to ensure software quality and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and debug routing protocol and service issues under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Document design specifications, test plans, and software functionalities.
  • Learn and apply skills in MPLS, IS-IS, Segment Routing features (SR-MPLS, SRv6), TiLFA, EVPN, Ethernet services, IPv4/IPv6 protocols, and transport protocols.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and industry standards related to routing and IP.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the software development lifecycle.
