About The Position

This position is responsible for accomplishing assigned solid waste collection routes within the given time frame, providing customer service to citizen inquiries, comments, or concerns, and using caution in surrounding areas to ensure the route is done in a safe manner. The role involves learning and memorizing routes, maintaining vigilance of surroundings, operating an automated truck with a hydraulic arm, and emptying garbage and recycle bins. Additionally, the Route Specialist II will carry out work orders, keep logs updated, report violations and unsafe conditions, conduct pre and post-trip inspections, perform basic maintenance, train new employees, respond to customer questions, attend safety meetings, and drive a City vehicle for City business.

  • Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of this position.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least two (2) years of truck driving experience.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License B is required.
  • If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • Thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
  • Must undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing for safety-sensitive functions/positions.
  • Must be able to function in a principle-based organization that has a culture built on character and core values.

Responsibilities

  • Accomplish assigned solid waste collection routes within the given time frame.
  • Provide customer service to citizen inquiries, comments, or concerns.
  • Use caution in surrounding areas to ensure route is done in a safe manner.
  • Learn and memorize routes consisting of 1,200 to 1,300 residents while safely driving and utilizing an automated truck.
  • Maintain vigilance of surroundings looking out for citizens, parked vehicles, overhead power lines, etc., in order to assure safe operations on a daily basis.
  • Safely carry out and complete assigned route while operating automated truck mounted with a hydraulic arm and lifting and emptying garbage and recycle bins.
  • Carry out and complete assigned WebQa/311 work orders, keep logs updated and reporting violations and unsafe conditions to customer service via radio communication.
  • Conducts pre and post-trip inspection on equipment.
  • Perform basic maintenance including but not limited to washing, cleaning of chute and truck interior to maintain a clean and professional image.
  • Train and/or assist in the training of new employees by relying on previous experience and capability to use the tools and equipment to achieve the objectives for the position as requested by management.
  • Respond to customer questions and needs in a polite and courteous manner and assist with any questions or concerns.
  • Attend bi-weekly safety meetings and comply with city and state policies and ordinances.
  • Drive a City vehicle for City business use.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
