About The Position

This position is responsible for accomplishing assigned solid waste collection routes within the given time frame, providing customer service to citizens, and ensuring safe operations. The Route Specialist II will learn and memorize routes, maintain vigilance of surroundings, and operate an automated truck with a hydraulic arm to lift and empty garbage and recycle bins. They will also carry out work orders, keep logs updated, report violations, and conduct pre and post-trip inspections. Basic maintenance of the equipment, training new employees, and responding to customer inquiries are also key responsibilities. The role requires driving a City vehicle and attending safety meetings.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least two (2) years of truck driving experience.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License B is required.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor.
  • Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work and routine work.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
  • Ability to project a positive and professional image of the City of Laredo.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.
  • Ability to comply with all City of Laredo's policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Accomplish assigned solid waste collection routes within the given time frame.
  • Provide customer service to citizens inquiries, comments, or concerns.
  • Use caution in surrounding areas to ensure route is done in a safe manner.
  • Learn and memorize routes consisting of 1,200 to 1,300 residents while safely driving and utilizing an automated truck.
  • Maintain vigilance of surrounding looking out for citizens, parked vehicles, overhead power lines, etc., in order to assure safe operations on a daily basis.
  • Safely carry out and complete assigned route while operating automated truck mounted with a hydraulic arm, lifting and emptying garbage and recycle bins.
  • Carry out and complete assigned WebQa/311 work orders, keep logs updated and reporting violations and unsafe conditions to customer service via radio communication.
  • Conducts pre and post trip inspection on equipment.
  • Conduct basic maintenance including but not limited to washing, cleaning of chute and truck interior to maintain a clean and professional image.
  • Trains and/or assists in the training of new employees by relying on previous experience and capability to use the tools and equipment to achieve the objectives of the position as requested by management.
  • Responds to customer questions and needs in a polite and courteous manner and assists with any questions or concerns.
  • Attends bi-weekly safety meetings and complies with city and state policies and ordinances.
  • Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
