CFD Research Corporation is seeking multidisciplinary design experts in rotary-wing and advanced air vehicle design to support the U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Center’s (AvMC) Technology Development Directorate (TDD). This opportunity places you at the forefront of Army Aviation research and technology development using state-of-the-art modeling tools and design resources. You will apply computational tools and build parametric models to support rotorcraft conceptual, preliminary, and detailed component design activities. You will create 3D parametric CAD models for the development and evaluation of new aircraft concepts against user requirements and provide technical expertise to Conceptual Design and Assessment (CD&A) branch for future air vehicle concepts and exploration design initiatives.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience performing design of crewed or uncrewed air systems, including aircraft performance and weight estimation.
  • Hands-on experience with Creo Parametric for 3D aircraft layout and modeling.
  • Experience developing aircraft designs and estimating performance using modeling and simulation tools.
  • Experience conducting aircraft trade studies to define and explore trade space.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time

  • Proficiency with OpenVSP and OpenMDAO.

Responsibilities

  • Construct detailed parametric CAD layouts of aircraft concepts to support design iterations and trade studies.
  • Conduct layout studies to determine optimal placement of components and identify potential interference or integration issues.
  • Generate aircraft geometries needed for survivability analysis.
  • Inform trade studies on aircraft configurations by highlighting geometric and operational constraints.
  • Support senior engineers in assessing air vehicle performance and weights against operational requirements.
  • Use government-standard tools, such as NASA Design and Analysis of Rotorcraft (NDARC), for aircraft modeling and performance assessment.
  • Explore requirements trade space and provide guidance on operational impacts of design features as they relate to user and mission needs.
